My cousin just bought it a month ago. Has about 46k miles on it. Really good condition with one owner. It stalls out once in a while. Everything looks fine. No check engine light. Not overheating....about 14 volts. Did a full tune up...plugs, wires, oil, all filters, cap dist. Dealer changed out the coil. Dont think a code reader will show anything since there is no check engine light.

what size engine does it have? This thing could be tricky. I would have someone with a scope check cam and crank sensors hot and cold. this truck also has an auto shut down relay.that can shut down fuel pump/ injectors. check coolant sensor also good luck

How does it stall out? Sputters at a stop sign? Sounds like a few things such as TPS, IAC or even fuel pump. You'll need a manual to get the settings. Chilton manual might have settings for a vehicle of that age.

I have a jeep, and I found Jeepsunlimited.com to be excellent source of info, much like the buick board. I would try posting over there.

It's a 4.0 inline 6. Sometimes it just stalls imediatley and sometimes it sputters and dies. Changed out the fuel filter and thought that fixed the problem. Of course died again today.

Thanks for the jeep link....will check it out.

Replace the crank sensor. 9 times out of 10 thats the problem. I think there about $70 at the parts store. Let me know if that takes care of the problem.

Crank Sensor

One more for the crank sensor. My wife would not drive ours she was so scared of it. I confirmed everything was good and it would still stall occasionally. I spoke to a tech in the shop and he said it was the crank sensor, changed it and never happened again. I sold it a few years ago and it ran like a champ at 160k.

Is there an adjustment when I install the new crank sensor? Lookin in the chiltons..dont see anything about adjusting.

It slides in the bell housing on the transmission and picks up off the flex plate I believe. I can't remember if there is an adjustment in and out but I remeber it only took a few minutes.

There isnt any adjustment. There is a thin piece of cardboard on the end of the sensor. The flywheel tears off the paper and you have the proper air gap. Its a pretty easy sensor to replace.

I had a similar problem with my Jeep. It ended up being an o2 sensor. The car would sputter and then run ok for a while. I also had a crank sensor go out and the Jeep would not start, even the gauges would not work, I thought it was the ecm and bought another without a fix. Crank sensors are known to be a problem on these vehicles. If I remember right the crank sensor was a little hard to get to, I believe it was close to the top of the bell housing and there is a piece of thin cardboard on the sensor for the setting, just install and tighten and the cardboard will tear away.

I think only the factory replacement sensors come with the cardboard spacer. That sensor looks like the right one but dont quote me on it, its been a while since I replaced a crank sensor in a Jeep.

If I can recall, the sensor that I bought may not have had something as thick as cardboard but it did have something over the sensor.

The sensor looks like a pain to get to. We are gonna get a code reader. Sounds like a good tool to have for this prob and future probs. Could it have an error code and not have any check engine light? Any code readers you recomend?

There is a sequence of turning the key in the on and off position within around 5 seconds that will display the codes by flashing I think the check engine light in the dash. I can't remember the exact sequence I think you have to turn the key on and off like three times within the 5 sec for the codes to display. You may want to do a search on this. I did not have to buy a scanner to display codes. I don't think my bad crank sensor displayed a code though. Since you already have the sensor I would install it. I know its a pain though. When my sensor went bad my Jeep would not start. Before I changed the sensor there were two other occasions that the vehicle would not start and I tried again later and it did start, but when it finally went out I was dead in the water, good luck.

Got a code reader from ACTRON. It had a code "P0351 Ignition Coil “A” Primary/Secondary Circuit"

Got a code reader from ACTRON. It had a code "P0351 Ignition Coil “A” Primary/Secondary Circuit"

The coil was replaced when it was purchased. For the hell of it we swapped out the Automatic shut down relay. Car is still shutting down. Could not find any detailed info on the error code. I notice ther is a "ignition coil A, B, C, and so on. Not sure what that means. We reset the code and it stumbled and missed when we turned on the AC but did not die. The code did not come back but it has only been a day and did no die completly.
