I need help ,I changed the fluid on my fairly stock t-type with over100k on the life,(by the way just purchsed it about 1 year ago and don't know the history of the car)and since changing the trans fluid and filter and cleaning up the pan,the trans is not shifting through the 1-2 gears, when I smash the pedal to the floor, but when I casual drive down the street it will shift but at high rpm and sloppy and sometimes when I step on the pedal and get off it quick, then it shifts,I tried the tv cable but nothing, people tell me that is only for 2-3 and upper gears not the 1-2 shift,it does go through the other gears and will pull strong in the upper gears but no luck from 1-2 motor just revs like iut is going to explode, and jerks the car back and forth,I just am looking to see if anyone has had this problem,or if my trans is just going or maybe a converter issue or something, can someone please help this is a problem thats really bugging me??can't trust just any trans shop to check it for me.
Thanks Brian

Remove the trans cable from the throttle, rev the engine to about 2000 rpm and then jerk on the cable back and forth like you're pumping your peter. Sometimes a small piece of trash gets caught in the throttle valve and doing this may help dislodge it. No guarantees though...

do you have engine braking?

check the governor assembly. see if the springs are still on.

the way you're describing it sounds like debris in the valve body causing the shift valves to stick. That could only point to the converter.

Piece of advice....if you don't have a solid tranny/converter in the car it will only frustrate you. If you plan on keeping/modding your GN I would check into getting a built trans from one of our supporting vendors here on the site. You cant go wrong. Also a converter that is for your application. Keep in mind turbo/boost/chip/converter is what these cars revolve around.

keep us posted.

goodluck.

turbo1dr,
I was curious to the fact does the tv cable control the 1-2 gear shift??
I am going to try this but was just curious to weather someone told me the truth about the tv cable only working the uper gear shifts.
I hope this works since it does still feel strong when it hits the high gears and just wanted to be certain that it wasn't the trans going,I will try this with the cable and let you know what happeded,
Thanks again Brian

what do you mean engine braking? and where is the governor located, sorry for maybe an obvious question but I am not that familiar with transmisions and check the springs you said??
I was curious if it was the converter or not but it does drive if I baby it around and manually shift with letting my foot of the accelerator and then back on it??
thanks for the response Brian

Brian,
Engine Braking is when you're driving the car and you let off the gas and the car slows down. When you don't have Engine Braking the engine goes back to an idle.

The gov' is located under the pan, at the rear of the transmission. There are (4) 13mm headed screws holding in place. Once you remove the screws the assmelby will drop down and you'll notice at one end there is a metal piece that has a spring attached and you should have (2) check balls, one on each side. Also make sure the seals are on the end of the shaft too.

If that checks out good then it could be an early sign that you're converter is going bad or your trans needs gone through and freshened up and valve body recalibrated.

Also the TV cable controls line pressure in the trans. It's controled by the throttle blade position and tells the trans to kick the psi up because you're applying more force to the driveline. If this cable is not set correctly or disconneted for some reason the trans will not shift at the right points and you will burn the trans very quickly. (burning as in clutches and bands) If the line psi is not up it will overheat and heat is the #1 reason for transmission failure. Always wise to install a external cooler to assist keeping the fluid from getting hot.

Ok thanks alot for that quick lesson,as for the braking NO the car doesn't do that it I guess you would say goes back to idle, why would I just start having these problems after changing the fluid??
Thanks

It could be a coincidence. Maybe the filter or new fluid dislodged a piece of trash or something. more than likely a coincience.

I am actualy having the same problem under the same circumstances. Changed fluid and filter, now second gear is gone, just as the op described. Though, after driving on it this way for maybe 150 miles, I'm now having some serious slipping in 3rd at all RPMs and power levels... I'll certainly try the suggestions posted in here, but thought I'd mention the total similarity of our trans problems, you know, for the record and such.

Check the filter you removed and ensure the orange o-ring is still on the stem that went into the valve body. It pulls off the filter very easy and stays stuck in the valve body. Then you put the new filter on and it runs into the o-ring that is still there and does not seat properly. I had a very similar issue and that is all it was. Had a friend that had it happen to him also.
