My tranny was rebuilt about 10 months ago and I installed a 2800 look up converter. I have a tranny cooler up front with an electrical fan hooked up to it (Yes, It runs very cool). I have heard that looking the converter gives you more MPH? I have never tried this but would like to.

Will anything be at risk? What are good's and Bad's?

TIA

LOCKING CONVERTER

i do know that locking the converter is good for at least .2 tenths in the 1/4 mile. but you should know it is hard on the converter it wiil make it run hotter but as long as you don't do it all the time you shouldn't run into any problems. i would only lock mine up at the track.

teddie87gn I think you may have things reversed.
The way I understand it.
In normal driving the slipage of the converter creates more heat than when it is locked up. The higher the stall, the more heat is generated.
For racing, the forcing the converter to lockup causes more wear and tear on the L/U linning of the converter.

Gary

This is correct with the exception of wearing the clutch....

Teddy........Please do not take that in a negative light as I do not think it was meant to be conveyed that way. If in fact you were told that or things were explained to you in that way, This is good as we have educated one more person. NEVER be afraid to ask a question or reply to a post, as the only stupid question is the one not asked. I hope I didnt insult you in any way. I think it is great that you replied and I wish you would continue to. Hang around, lots of info around here. LOL :)

Thanks again

To Lock or Not to Lock

How long does a stock, low mileage D5 usually last on a car in the low 12's, if it is WOT locked at the track???

Is it safer to lock at a particular MPH using the chip programming than to have a forced lock going into 2nd??? What MPH?? I read somewhere once that the amount of fluid dissipated when locking the converter is substantial and therefore it is not such a great idea to do it right at the shift.

TG

Fluid dissapate is not true, however to answer question about how long will it last? Well I got 122,000 miles and counting....
and NOBODY is harder on one than me :D

I followed you to the NorCall BBQ

that we4 chirps the 1-2 shift be it 1/4 thorttle or WOT...plus you drive way to fast on the HWY, :D
