I have a new tranny and new PTC 9.5" non lock up. Installed last fall at end of season and did not have much of a chance to drive until this year. I have about 50 miles on the tranny and converter, It has leaked since the begining.

At 1st I thought it was just the pan, so replaced gasket, still leaking.

I noticed that when it is running it is coming off of the converter and misting a line of fluid on the ground (i dont run a converter cover on this car).

I thought I would ask here 1st of how to proceed diagnosis. I connot see much fluid on the pump of on the face of. I appears to be just on the converter. I have attached a picture.

Thanks,

Dennis

From the looks of the spray pattern it doent look like the converter, looks to be coming from the shaft area , maybe the front seal ??

Possibly. It could also be a bad weld. To check, I use a large dust cap over the neck with a hose clamp, poke a little hole in it and add some compressed air. Put a new pump seal in it while its out.

Ok, sounds straight forward and will give it a shot.. where will the leak most likely be?

Thanks,

Dennis

You can call me at 256-303-5387 and I'll get some info from you. It may be the snout where the pump drive slots are cut.

Well thanks Dusty,

Hopefully it is just a seal, but it does not look that way for now. But I will know more after I get it out and do some testing.

Call you tomorrow..

And again, thanks!

I just went through this with my PTC convertor a few months ago.... Long story short, after chasing where the leak was coming from for several days, I was advised to take the converter to a local convertor shop that offered to pressure test it for me for free... The test showed about a 1 inch crack at the base of the neck that was only apparent when under pressure.... They installed a new neck for about 100.00 & everything is great again.... :)
Love the PTC converter though, it definitely rocks!!

Either way can you post what the cause was, it may help someone in the future. I hope you get it sorted out without too much grief.

I will indeed post findings. I think I have drove this car a total of 1000 miles in 8 years I have owned it...Always something for sure... true test of patients.

It can be difficult to diagnose a converter leak since the converter throws the oil everywhere. It can come out where the neck is welded to the body, the weld that joins the two half's together, the pilot the fits in the crank and the bolt pads for the flex-plate. Make sure the outside of the converter is completely dry before starting this test.

At our shop we usually take the converter out lay it flat fill it all the way with fluid take a radiator hose and a radiator tester attach radiator hose over the converter neck and pressure it up. Usually it's a pin hole around the weld on the neck.

The trans might be overheating and spraying fluid. Check the temp...easy with a laser temp gun.

He's sending it back to me. He's pressure tested it at 40-60psi and can't find a leak. He's also replaced the front seal but can't determine what is causing it to leak. We'll check it to see what we can find.
