Hello,

Am going to remove my transmission. Will 3-ton jackstands be able to get the car high enough to drop the tranny and slide it out?

You should be able to get by with ramps in the front and jack stands in the back, just high enough to level the car.

3 ton stands may be too short. I like to raise the pan to about 18" My jack's max height is 19-1/2". Craftsman 6 ton stands look good for about $35.

Dude, no jack stands in the back and I only use little ones in the front, up 3 clicks. The bell housing will slide right out by pickin up the tail and pullin her out the driverside......Piece of cake. You don't have to go as high as one would think.

Man, if I tried that method I'd get stuck and would have to have the wife pull me out by the ankles. :p

Seriously though, if you want the added comfort of a creeper you'll need to get the car high enough so you can lay on it and still move around under there and work.

I've never been a creeper fan......I use a big piece of thick card board. More mobility and when the trans is out it doesn't scratch up the pan when you drag it out.

I slide the housing part right by the wheel well. Hard to get leverage while using a creeper, but it is easier on the back at times. :)

Great suggestions thank you.

Creepers imply you have a nice smooth surface to creep on. I don't have that unfortunately. A big piece of cardboard is handy as Russ mentions - you slide around easy plus it catches spills! :)

I'll jack it up and see what happens. I know that the tranny is about 18" from botton to top, so I will at need that much clearance at least. Thanks for the help.
