How critical is the length of the vane? I've seen the dimensions for the rotor & slide but nothing is mentioned about the vanes.

Just for kicks and giggles, I'll make a guess that they aren't all that critical.

Centrifugal (centripetal for knit-pickers) force will keep them out and pumping, esp. at higher RPM.

Also, unless it was meant as a joke (doesn't seem likely), the steel pump ring kit I bought stated that the rings were intentionally a tad oversize--- as a last resort, if the pump wasn't free, the instructions suggested wiping the vanes on a concrete garage floor.
(That would obviously the become the ring end).

OK experts, the rest of the story, please!

Maybe I should have referred to the dimension as height, I know what you mean A.G.

One would think that the vane height is just as critical as the height of the rotor that they slide into. Everything needs to fit into the pocket in the pump cover at the same depth.

the vanes are usually .0015 shorter than the rotor and slide .leakage is there but at the speed the rotor turns it is not of great concern because the vane behind the leaker pulls the oil into its area as it spins.although i am not sure i would imagine this is to reduce sticking when the vanes expand due to heat .this is certainly an area i havent explored much and maybe it is worth further investigation,

That's about what I've been coming up with, although my mic. doesn't read out to .0001 Kinda have to read between the lines. ;)

Just watch out for the vane kits thru RPM/Merit. They are not made square. Sides are not parrallel on every single vane. You might have to buy 30 to find 10 good ones. Found out the hard way a few years back. Just like their pump kits with the "one size fits all" rotor and slide assemblies. I have used TransStar since and never had a problem with their vanes.

The vanes are smaller

than the rotor and slide. Like said above, it carries the oil and the rotor disperses the oil into the pressure cavity. I have not experianced any problems with the vanes and the are HARD!. The only ones I have seen with a problem are the kolene coated ones. No positive effect and hang up sometimes. As far as RPM/Axion ones , I have seen a very few unsquare but not too many. Looks like Eric got them all. LOL :) Transtar's come in a pack of 10 where RPM/Axion comes 1-50.
