Why is it animal cruelty to shoot a dog but it's ok for the county ( or whoever ) to gas them? If he had put them in a box and run his car exhaust into the box would that have been ok?

He could have taken them to his local Humane Society and they would put them up for adoption before they would put them down.... Also, them being puppies there is a high likely hood that they would've been adopted because most people like to adopt a puppy rather than an adult dog....
Around here you have to pay the Humane Society to take animals. They will give them all their shots etc and you have to pay that before they even take them. A friend was trying to get rid of her cat and it was going to cost her $75 to drop the cat off. She eventually found a owner but as easy as it sounds finding somebody to take a free animal can be a PITA.. =(

The guy's an ass, and I'm glad he took one in the wrist. If he only wanted one dog, he should have had his dog spayed instead of being a cheap loser. Then he wouldn't have had this situation in the first place. There's some responsibility with being a pet owner, if you can't do it right, don't do it at all.
I say he does not get convicted. The cruel reality is there are farmers that make these tough decisions every day. You do not see farmers going to jail for animal cruelty when they decide to put animals down. I can guarantee you if a farmer was in this guys same position and could not find homes for them, he would put them down.
On the other hand, he should not have let his dog have puppies if he could not take care of them or count on people taking them. There are alot of people that have children in the same situation. They cannot take care of the child properly but they have them anyway. Then they use them to get a monthly government achievement award for lack of responsibility. Those people should be the ones who go to jail for child cruelty in my opinion.
