Yes, that's right. I've only driven for about 40 years. Finished a run at the track and noticed that car was overheating (my dual fans quit). Was already on side road back to pits. Shut car off and was coasting. I was only going about 5 maybe 10 mph and went to put car in neutral to restart and went into reverse. This was my just rebuild, with major upgrades, just put in transmission. It made bad sounds. I did drive it back to pits and it shifted fine, but started making a few "rubbing" sounds as I speeded up. Hauled it back home and tranny guy just got pan off and has found some pieces.
Any guesses what this is going to be before he takes it apart for further inspection?
In case you thought that was stupid, I decided to add a new wiring set with new relay from Caspers for my dual fans. While drilling the hole to mount relays, I drilled a nice hole right into my radiator. Now I get to upgrade to a f body radiator.
Can anyone top that weekend?

If the shifter was set up correctly it should be nearly impossible to get it in reverse UNLESS you were holding down the button on the shifter when moving it forward. Do not hold down the button when moving the gear selector toward the front of the car. It shouldnt go into reverse unless the button is pressed! Tear it down and find out what broke. Or post pics of the broken pieces.

Come to think of it, I'm sure you don't have to hold down button to get in reverse. I just pushed it forward and it went too far.

You should have to hold it down. Ive got 4 Tr's here and i just checked them all. The furthest the shifter will go forward without holding the button in is neutral. You must have a broken piece in your shifter.

Mike, broken shifter or not...you are the kind of guy I like. Anybody that can poke fun at his own mistakes is OK in my book. My mistakes often involve myself telling myself beforehand that if I do that I could break something...and then I do it anyway....and break something. Sorta like my reasoning skills work well initially and then fail me while I'm performing the task :)

Good luck in the repairs....may they cost little and go quickly.

Bob

Thanks for the thoughts Bob. That's my prayer; get fixed reasonably cheap and fairly quick. I really need to check my shifter, I have an aftermarket handle on it. I know I push the buttom to get out of park, but after that it's just move it where you want.

I got run over by a 73 Mustang on a Saturday morning a few years back while trying to help out a guy with his valve body. My right arm was practically dead for about 3 weeks. Does this count???
:)

whoops

What type of tranny. Check the rear sprag first. you should find roller bearings the the pan

Update: It doen't look like I went in reverse. There was another problem going on and while I was rolling and put in neutral to restart it and it made a noise, which made me think I put it in reverse. The "torrington bearing" inside the planetary gears came apart and the rollers in the bearing flew out into the gears and ate things up. I had just had this rebuilt with major H.P parts. My rebuild guy said that he inspects the bearing and if it looks good doesn't change it. After spending a grand in parts, I wish he would have asked me to spend another $5.00 for a bearing. I ordered some more parts from CK performance. There was no sign of lack of lubrication to the bearing, so I guess it just came apart.

Its not typical to replace those bearings. The most common one to replace would be the one between the OD carrier and planet. Usually if they fail its because there was excessive end play or no lube. If no lube the planets will look like hell too.
