I am trying to help someone with a science lab project and I am trying to find a chemical that will eat completely through sheet metal maybe 1/4" thick...can sulfuric acid do this? i am not familiar with what certain chemicals are capable of...can anyone give me any ideas of what does what?

oh yeah there are many acids that will do this as well as many bases

anything will do it just find a way to neutralize it and make sure it is a strong enough mixture and not too dilluted and it will go through

sulfuric acid will work
nitric acid really works well on iron
hydrofluoric is one of the strongest so be careful

again make sure you have some baking soda to neutralize it!

so basically i pour the baking soda on the sheet metal...then just pour the straight sulfuric acid on the baking soda and it will start to eat through the metal? awesome! that sounds simple...thanks:D

ohhhh i am stupid...so you pour the acid on the metal directly and then to stop it you just pour baking soda on it...my bad

Correct...and make CERTAIN you don't get it on you (use gloves & safety eyewear) and do NOT breathe the fumes.

VERY harmful stuff! Be mega-careful!

Make sure the room is WELL ventalated!! Also, if there are going to be spectators, make sure none of them get close enough to get hurt. Dont want any casualties.

Try to get concentrated acid. That diluted stuff will take a long time to work and it wont be very spectacular. ;)

Good luck

Nitric Acid? Works good for making things go BOOM!!!

Added to cotton it makes gun cotton which explodes pretty good, works well with wood also, not to mention glycerin, but make sure you have plenty of ice around:eek:
