I think the correct comparison should be worded you wouldn't take your own drugs and other consumables to the hospital if you went in for surgery. Now that would be funny!

Maybe there was an issue seeing as these were emissions related parts? I can remember some shops being skitish on working on some of my cars because I removed the cat and had a straight pipe there. Tire shops were always a problem. For some strange reason the only place not affraid was the muffler shop. I guess he knew how to work the system. He basically told me no problem, I'm not the one who removed it.

Parts, insurance, utilities are tax deductable? Thats a new one on me. I'm going to have open up my own shop. Sounds better than welfare. Anybody who doesn't work on or with cars doesn't have a clue on what it takes to run this type of buisiness.

If you talked about how much the job would be before he started, he knew in advance you were bringing your own parts, and especially if he has his standard rate posted but not the "customer supplied parts" rate, then yes, I would be a little annoyed at not being told the rate would be higher until after the job was done and I got the bill. I'm going to ignore where you conspired with him to not pay the sales tax, and while technically most credit card agreements prohibit extra charges to use a card, a cash discount is not that uncommon given that it costs most small businesses 3-5% when a customer pays with a credit card. Bottom line, he charged less than two hours of labor, so we are only talking about what, $10 or $20 here? Chalk it up as a lesson learned, to ask all the details before the job, and let it go. ($273 total before tax, minus $90 for the sensor, minus $15 for the dye, minus $9 for the gasket, divided by $85/hr, is 1.9 hours. Even if you expected the rate to be $75, that's 1.9*$85 minus 1.9*$75 equals $19. As life lessons go, cheap. :-))

Agree. I could not have said it better.

Well, I live on the coast and there are several eateries that will prepare the fish that you catch and bring in for a fee.

Labor is labor and parts is parts. I can understand a mechanic not wanting to install "junk" parts that a customers bring in, but it sounds like he brought in quality parts.

The main point is, the mechanic has his policies and you can abide by his rules or take your business elsewhere.

I only work on performance cars anymore. No daily drivers. I recommend to the customer what to buy and where to get it. Once he delivers the car and the parts I perform the labor. Since I work on performance oriented cars and do not supply the parts most times but not always I never warranty anything. I know sounds weird but it so far has worked very well for me. Now I have done some warranty work on stuff I have delivered or purchased. I tell people that race cars and parts do not come with a warranty. They accept that and I have am building a good customer base. I guess my statement is I have no problems with customer parts as long as they get what I recommend and understand up front that there is no warranty on my labor. If it needs replaced I will charge for it. I try to not be to picky and will give large discounts especailly if it something that they purchased from a recommended vendor who is warranty the part. If you were not aware up front then I would be a little miffed. If you did not tell him you were bringing your own parts during the quote then I understand. Imnot much help am I?
