Hi as you can see I'm new,I've beeen lurking for a while here.I have been soaking up alot of good info here!

I have a friend that has an '84 BQ tranny.(if he hasn't sold it yet)He got it in a trade and guy the just told him it was rebuilt would not tell him what was done.I know the '84-'85s are not as strong but would it be strong enough for a warmed up 400 pontiac motor in my '66 GTO?I'm not really panning to race the car much, mostly drinving around.

Eric

Not as strong?

Says who? I know of more than one that is behind 600 HP plus!!!!!!!!
Servo is different. That is all about all.

As long as it has the later reverse input drum its as strong as any late 85 and up BQ or BR. Just swap out the servo and recalibrate and your good to go.

GN 200R4s can take little power :p NOT a woulda, coulda, shoulda

How much hp does a warmed up 400 make? Ive put well over 700 ft lbs through the 200 on numerous occasions:eek: .

I have heard that the 86-7s had several important upgrades vs the '84-5s so they are recommended as better starting point.

.060 400 '67 block
60918 crower cam
#16 '68 heads 9~1 compression
stock Q-jet intake
Cliff prep Q-jet
R/A headers
2 1/2 exaust
3:23 gears

I'm guessing 350 H/P

Only the drum and servo. The late 85 BQ has the later hardened reverse input drum. Most early transmissions had this replaced at one time or another. All else is nearly the same.

So do you think the trans would work behind the 400 without more internal upgrades? The servo can be replaced pretty easy?

It will work just fine assuming someone that knows 2004R`s puts it together.
A quality freshen up, a couple boosters, and a servo and you will have a nice trans.

What recalibration does changing to a bigger servo require?
Or are you talking governor weights?

Some day I may learn this stuff...

Just verifying band clearance for a servo swap. A recalibration kit should be installed regardless imo. Items included would be boost valves, seperator plate mods, and replacement of vb components. A bottom feed filter is a wise idea also.

Thanks... appreciate the clarification. (I'd been wondering if a larger servo somehow threw off shift timing).

Update

The guy is asking $500 for the rebuild trans and converter.Does that sound reasonable?

Sounds reasonable if fresh but id be sure to find out exactly what has been done to it. Then post it here so we can further advise.

:frown: The guy has it in storage and doesn't want to dig it out until spring. He just got back to me a couple days ago,he said he been having a crappy few months so I don't want to tick him off.I had asked for some close up pics. What does it cost to have a 200r4 guy open it up to inspect it?
