In my Astroroof, I have the small round dome light, but in other GN's I have seen, some have a rectangle looking one that has map lights on either side, but have not seen this dome light on another astroroof, just on hardtops. Was it an option for this "map light" dome light? If I were to pick one up, would it fit? I'm going to be ordering the ABS headliner from Brian, as mine is sagging and having a better dome light would be nice.

I do not know if it was an option for the Astro roof, however I have heard that the cutout in the headliner is too large for the maplight version. If you are going to replace the headliner that would be a great time to make the switch. Just cut the hole for the wires so you can cover it up with the new dome light.

The map light & dome light are about 6"-8" difference in locations. The mounting bracket is also needed when converting to relocate to the correct location.
Dome was standard & map light was an option.

First thing I did in my WE4 with Astroroof was install the maplight in place of the dome light.

Fits right in there using the same wiring and two screws and no rivets unlike the factory did, for a more secure mounting (never needed on my car) you would have to add the rear rivets.

Mine went in the stock location just fine, I did it 20 years ago so I'm not sure if I drilled one mounting hole or not to fit the new bracket in place with sheet metal screws.

Minor fabrication and wiring, power and ground, and it covered most of the depression from the stock dome light round bracket but not quite all of it, I rarely looked up at it excepting when turning on the map lights.

Depression in the headliner faded with age and certainly with sagging anyways. ;)

No headliners right now so no good pics. for ya.

And yes if you buy one used make sure you get the whole thing.

I have a GN with the factory astroroof and maplights as well maybe I can get some pics. of both cars for ya since I got this new digital camera for Christmas.

With no headliners I think most of the factory mounting could be pictured if I left it all in there, lights are back in both cars just no headliners.

PS: The dome light isn't quite as good as the larger round one but the maplights are quite bright and work very well.

The mid 80's G-body Grand Prix had an even stranger C95 map light option. It consisted of the C95 style Buick lamp but instead of the chrome metal housing it was plastic and molded the same color of the interior. It also used the little round lamps in the 1/4 trim panels like the T-Top cars. Even on the solid roof models. My Rivieras have a reading lamp that is standard in those 1/4 trims. I would imagine if you added those round 1/4 lamps along with the C95 map lights and inside mirror lamps you would have enough light in there to do brain surgery.

Or at least find the change you dropped at the toll station. :p

Pictures will require me to find some Cybersnot viewer capable of getting pictures out of my new Cybersnot camera that is compatible with windows 98.

So, don't hold your breath, since it took me almost a year to get my IPOD to be compatible with windows 98, good old winamp and some plug ins.
