okay here is the scoop, i have a tranny built by art carr here in cali, for some reason they cant get the shifting right on this thing, their fix for higher wot rpm is adjusting the cable but that ruins the light throttle shiftpoints.

light throttle right now is

1st to 2nd 25mph seems right
2nd to 3rd 45mph it bangs hard seems not right

WOT
1st to 2nd around 4,500rpm too low it i am right this should be around 5,000rpm
2nd to 3rd around 4,750rpm too low this should be around 5,200rpm

now if i adjust the cable to make it shift higher at WOT when i drive the car at light throttle the 3rd gear wont come on until 55mph and it freaking hits hard, i even have to let go of the gas to make it shift what can be causing this to happen the transmission has the original valve body code D6 and the original grand national governor so thats not the problem any ideas welcome as to how to fix and raise the WOT shift points without messing up the light throttle driveability..

thanks

You need more pressure in the T.V. limit circuit. You can either shim the T.V.limit valvespring or install a stiffer spring. I use a kitchen scale to compair spring pressures.

It kinda makes me mad when people (especially transmission shops) recommend backing off the TV cable adjuster under the hood to move/change shift quality or location. As far as I can tell..... this adjustment is not to be jacked with..... you push the tab in... slide the housing toward the firewall....release the tab.... and rotate throttle to WOT and let it self adjust. ANY other setting is not correct.... if you adjust it tighter.... the first time you go WOT... it will adjust itself right where it needs to be.... if you go looser.... it will not have the internal trans pressures it is supposed to have and could lower shift points/tone down harsh shifts some.... but at the expense of clutch/band wear.... cause the pressures are too low.

With all that said.... if you desire different shift points..... IMHO look elswhere besides the TV cable adjuster...... try to tune the govenor... there are kits on the market with spring and weights to move the shift points around.... the proper way.....just leave the TV cable alone once it is adjusted correctly.

I feel confident Brian, Chris, or Bruce can chime in here to confirm/deny my thoughts.

I'll get back in my hole now......

Ahh, sounds like the problem I had 3 years ago with my Art Carr Tranny. WOT shifts were like 4000 rpms. He told me about the TV, etc and I insisted that it was set correctly. After some argueing, he decided that I had the wrong valve body. He sent one. We installed it, it got up to 4800 or 4900 rpms. I ground on the governor and got it up around 5100 on the 1-2. When I raced I had to manually shift the 2-3 because with the converter locked it would do the 4800 rpm crap again. But around town its around 5100 where the car seems to like it. Man, what a headache that was. I also forgot to mention that my converter was not locking, and my first drive home after installing the transmission I went to pass somebody on the highway (55mph) it kicked to 3rd and slipped baddddddddddddddd. I immediately pulled it over and checked the fluid. FULL, burnt smell. Too bad its out of warranty I guess. Good luck with yours sir!
