What are the differences and/or advantages between the two; mileage, efficiency, performance, driveability etc...OR could I save the $$ and just continue to use the stock d5 with my combo? (see sig)...getting ready to install motor/tranny after stock rebuild of both..btw its a street car so the concern is with low end torque and drivability for some long upcoming road trips, thanks

44 could use a little more stall but will work with the stock untouched D5. IMO I say stay with the D5 just dont lock it at WOT. Does the 44 have a .63 turbine housing?

Stock D5 is bigger/heavier compared to a 10" but hydraulically couples good in third unlocked.

10" 2400 "IF" built correctly can also be good coupler unlocked in third "IF" built right.

Try the stocker and see how it works IMO

What I found

I had about the same combo as you when I had the 49 on my car. I had the D5 restalled when I had the trans rebuilt. I really liked that combo. Stall speed was right on and the boost rise was steady. You might consider talking to Dusty and seeing if a restall would work better than a 10" converter.
For me, the weight of the 12" with the restall made the spool just right for me.
I put the 10" 2800 stall on the car with a new JB 6157 and the converter was way too loose for my liking.
HTH

Yea, it is a .63 housing on the te-44..actually i did pm Dusty already & he suggested the 10" 2400 would work well w my combo and goal witch ain't much just quick on the street..I was just curious about the re stalled d5's...thanks for your replys & Pete, how you liking that 194/204?

I do prefer the 10" converter just due to the much lighter weight but if you would like to stick with a D5 I can do that as well. A restalled D5 will work with the TE-44 and TA-49.

Send me a PM on a restall to 2400 for the D5 Dusty, please. I'm thinking 2600 but I'm poor and ceap after all. Thanks.

Which will be more efficient on the top end?
how much lighter is the 10" over the D5?

I didnt mind the stocker with my 44. I hated it with my 6152, then I went with the 10" PTC. Dusty helped me get it dialed in via a restall. I look forward to this year seeing if I can couple it even better up top with an addition of a cam. I think a 2400 10" PTC would be absolutely lights out with a 44! J

The tighter converter will always be more "efficient", the D5 is tighter than the 10" converters.

Chances are the 2400 10" will be quicker in et than the 2200 12" though because it will accelerate the car faster.

I'll have to weigh the converters to see the exact difference but it's considerable.

Don't laugh but - can you make a 2200 10"?
