Rear Brakes

Anyone do rear brake mods??

I want to add rear shoe (softer and bonded) 1st. Then, I will add larger rear brake cylinder. Finally, I hear I need a line lock for burnouts.

Will adding the bonded softer shoes help any??

Will they last? - looks like they will come loose before the riveted ones.

I am trying to get more boost from the line. I get 3-5# boost with my stock setup.

This is exactly what I am doing today, just picked up the wheel cylinders. On gnttype site, in tech articles, Mosher has a good article on the cylinders and line lock. I was just on Cottons web site, and he has the soft shoes, line lock, and cylinders. Going to call him next week. And yes, it should work to give you a higher boost launch. I figure at least 8 to 10 lb. I have just started to drag race, but I know the line lock will save the wear on the rear brakes, tranny, and rear dif.

Rear Drums - ALUMINUM ??

Is it safe to use a pair of junk yard special aluminum rear drums??

I plan to boost at about 5-10# of the line.

Will aluminum hold up to the abuse???

Twil,

As long as there aren't any cracks or wear problems with those drums they are fine. Both of my cars came with aluminum drums and I have made repeated 15# launches with one of my cars without any problems. Just make sure the drums are true and don't have any cracks and you will be fine.

How do the lg pads and S10 wheel cylinders act out on the road for everyday driving? Is there any problem with brake portioning?
Like locking the rear tires? Is it dangerous for a car that wouldn't see the track? I thought about this up-grade, can't make up my mind. Would like to hear more than a couble responses.

I'm only planning to do the brk shoes for now, hope this allows me to get alittle more spool up at the track. I still drive my car on the streets, so larger cylinders and line lock will be added later.

Question:
Are bonded brake shoes made of a softer material (less metallic) than riveted ones???

My parts store had them both - so I got the bonded. They appeared to have a less metal flakeness to them.

If you get the aluminum drums, you better get a line lock. I did not have a line lock with my aluminum drums and I ended up disintegrating them from the heat of doing burnouts against the foot brake.

I went with an adjustable prop valve so that I can adjust the rear brakes for normal street driving and then add more pressure to the rear for the track. Some say that the back end will lock-up easier with the larger shoes and cyl's so I did the prop valve to be on the safe side, and it happens to work great for drag racing as well.

I try to stay away from messing with the brakes. I had a local shop do it that has done quite a few others. I think it took them about 2 hours or so.
