I am getting ready to make a rear end change or a build up to my current car. My son exploded the posi unit on a 20# trans brake launch. http://www.photoreflect.com/scripts...hoto=08OD002S020017&start=0&album=0&adjust=-1 So I was wondering some peoples input to either Running a Ford 9" with either 3:50 or 3:73. Or a Dana 60 with either 3:23 or a 3:54 Or just get one of my GN rearends rebuilt with ford ends and new ring and pinion and either a spool or a vevy strong posi unit. The car is street driven as well as raced at the track. The car is around 3500# makes around 550 rwhp runs 10:34 at around 130. 10-15# launch I wanted to see what it would run with a 20# launch I guess the posi didn't like it. And I am running a turbo 400 in it.

i have a moser 12 bolt in my car and a 9 inch ford in my kids car. both great rears. i really like a spool over a clutch type carrier.

If you do the 8.5 inch rear I would not bother with a posi with how you launch the car. Cal Hartline has has good luck with a 8.5/Spool/33 Spline Set Up.
My issue is I don't know if I want to spend that kind on something that still has a weak center section

The 9 inch is strong but the down sides are weight and parasitic loss.
We ran one in Chris Chow's Car with a detroit locker down to 8.3 in the 1/4.
The 35 Spline Lockers are very expensive, when I purchased the rear end I think it was like $700 for the Locker a spool is close to $200 The spool will also be safer down the 1/4.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the Dana 60, the only down side I see is that the Ford Stuff will be easier to come by and maybe cheaper for replacement parts.

Steve, talk to Jason (FLIP) about the Dana 60 that he put in his car. I helped him put it in, and it went in pretty smooth.

I have a customer who has gone 7.94 w/an 8.5 rear

Parts and weight please!!!
You are such a tease, you always make me ask!

Sorry John. I didn't post details since it wasn't Buick realted :)
Donnie Hastings. SBC with an F-2R charger in a 3200# Camaro. GM 8.5 w/35 spline axles, etc..

I'm running the original 8.5 housing with a Moser spool and axles, and the original GM 3.42 gear set with no problems...
Claude. :)

I use the original 8.5 rear with 33 spline spool and axles. A TA rear cover, with Ford ends welded on with the big-ass ford drum brakes...works great....before the t-brake, I could hold 20 lbs on the foot brake. I also have some gussets welded from the axle tube to the plate that holds the wheel cylinders to keep them straight. I had 1 twist on me a few years ago and blow out the wheel cylinder piston........ain't no fun at 100mph when you hit the brake and it goes to the floor.......also, with the ford ends and drum brakes, you get rid of the c-clips....very nice set-up.....good luck

Cal,

Thanks for giving me another option.
Is he running the stock caps?

Mark Williams used to sell a 12 bolt third member that bolts into a 9" ford housing that raises the pinion angle about 2 inches to reduce parasitic loss. I have a ford 9" in one of mine and now im looking a strange S-60 12 bolt. i think it might be like a dana 60 maybe full floater type with inner and outer axle bearings to put in my other GN.

Rear end

Thanks for the responses so far. And Merry Christmas. Hope Santa brings everyone what they wanted.

Just curious on some ratio's being ran too.

I think it depends on what you want to do.
I have seen between 3.23 and 3.90 as being common.
Most guys that are running faster than 135 use either a 3.42 or a 3.23.

8.5 10bolt

has anyone tried the Strange eng tapered bearing c-clip eliminators on a street car,do they leak like the other brands? Thanx Charlie

Have a Currie Ford 9" rear in my GN that the original owner put in when it was new. (Don't ask me why! ) Car had 4700 on it when I bought it. Running 31 spline axles, 3.50 gears with a traction lok. Also has 11" drum brakes. For 20 lb boost launches I would recommend going with a Locker since you say you also drive it on the street.

I am not sure why either but you now have as much rear as you will probably need.
