I will be picking up a 200-4R two weeks from now. Contrary to the other one I bought - this one was running 150k in a 1989 Caprice.

I already have one that is toast. Something happened inside the direct drum, all the piston springs were sheared off and rattling around inside. I think there was a problem with the band and pin too. However, the input shaft looks new... I mean new. I suspect this was a product of an imporper rebuild.

Anyway the other 200-4R may be good for some parts.

My point is, that I have some experience with the innards of a 200-4R.

My question is:
I have the haynes rebuild Manual.

I know there is a an ATSG and a video on rebuilding 200-4Rs. Both are expensive. Are they necessary ?

MTIA,

D.

I didn't consider the $15 I paid for a copy of an ATSG manual expensive (JCWhitney sells them). Cheap insurance even if you have experience inside, all it takes is a washer flipped over or a seal upside down to earn its keep. :) HTH's -Chuck

Technical Video

I helped a friend rebuild a Ford C6 while watching a Technical
Video, and I thought it was very good. I haven't seen the one
on the 200-4r, but it is probably OK. I don't think $30-$40 for
a high quality rebuild video is expensive. It could prevent a lot
of expensive parts from becoming junk. I think the ATSG manual
is about $20, pretty cheap for the info it contains. Using the search button on this site is also highly recommended. :)

GM manual + ATSG + TB

Buy an '85 or later GM factory manual that shows how to rebuild the 2004R--nice pictures and a manual for some non-popular models can be had for $5 or less at swap meets, an ATSG manual for the latest tolerances/procedures (I believe PTS has ATSG and the rebuild parts you need)http://www.2004rperformancecenter.com/ -- and use the post above "ATTENTION!!!! NEW VERSION!! Strengthening The 2004r" for the best performance tolerances and you have the all the info you need to do a rebuild.

Also, search the board when you encounter a problem--I think every question that can be asked has been asked several time.

Just be aware that the 2004R is a very complicated trannie to rebuild, especially if you have no experience with trannies.

I agre with Clay....

At the very least an ATSG manual will help get you thru, Haynes helps walk ya thru but ATSG has "SPECS" and details!!! ;)
