Hey everyone. The other day I noticed what seems to be red paint showing from under the black paint by the trunk and door area. I tried searching the forums but wasn’t able to find anything explaining what this could be. I was told the car was repainted once sometime in the early 90s, but no other information. Has anyone ever experienced or seen this? Thank in advance guys.

Does the unit have a spid label under the deck lid? Might check it for matching vin and the paint code it has to see what gm might have applied from the factory.

I did initially check for the SPID’s matching VIN and confirmed that. I’ll look into the RPO codes and let you know what I find. Thanks for the reply.

paint code is usually toward the right and has two digits and a U . the numbers correspond with a color.

So checked and the code checks out to be black, 19U. No other code on it that corresponds to another color. I’m stumped.
A friend of mine took a guess that maybe GM or someone else applied that red base coat or primer before hitting it with the black. But that’s the first time I’ve ever heard something like that.

could have been wrecked and repaired and primed with red oxide . these cars aren't exactly new any more and unless you know the history anything is possible.
