I have already printed the the "Strengthing The 200 4r" article.
What I'm looking for is the required type reading for one attempting to do thier first rebuild: Books, manuals, videos...
Also,
Suppliers of all the good stuff that is needed for the "strengthened" trans.
Thanks,

Now there's a man on a mission!!!

Repitition. On hand experiance is the best.

All the book will do is give you a guideline. If you build as per book for power it will be an experiance, possibly a marriage:D. I can offer you an ATSG manual which I stock for reference purposes. Also I can also offer you guidence and the correct quality parts to do a very nice job.
Be CLEAN and take your time. Anything that doesnt seem correct probobly isn't so double check yourself. Speed is not an issue here and if it is have someone else build it.
I will admit if you use our parts I can give you professional help as I know down to the molecule how they work and why they work.
Anyway, good luck and I admire you for attempting. However, you need to be preared to deal with the problems that arise and have the time and patience to deal with when in fact they do. Rome wasn't built in a day but it could be burned down in one night:D

I think you understand LOL

If I can be of assistance, please don't hesitate to yell..:D

I'm a yellin'

THANKS!

The type of reference material I seek will be detailed disassembly and reassembly order, procedure, and specifications.

The trans in my car is not a BRF. However, the chump that did the build said it is of the exact same specifications as the BRF. So I would like to know the things that make the BRF unit different from the other units.

I have read posts that mention types/models/variations of the 2004r that make for good units to use, I would like to learn what makes them different. I understand that the VB is different in the BRF but I do not know what about it is different and what if anything that can be done to make it the equivalent. If one were to do a rebuild on a somewhat standard 2004r, and use all the good parts and upgrades would it peform like an equivalent modded BRF? - Do all the mods raise the performance level beyond the benefits of the BRF?

I may find some answers now, as I read the "Strengthening post"
Thanks,

Call me when you can at work. I will explain it to you. I am not typing this as the race ( Winston Cup) is just about to restart after rain. I was putzing around on here all day waiting on rain delay. ( actually I was trying to convince myself that is was too hot outside to mow the lawn but the ole lady is not buying it) Anyway gimme shout this week.

I have a "how to build 2004r" video very basic though it is nice if you never done one for referencing to, also ATSG, Haynes and GM service manuals all of which are a big help if you know what you are doing to begin with. The biggest help for performance has been "Strengthing The 200 4r" article and this board itself. Like Bruce said "Be CLEAN and take your time" very small articles of debris can cause hugh unknown problems, also it took me 6 months of research and parts acquisition and help from here to start and finish my rebuild and it was well worth the wait to have what I have know. As far as parts you won't find any better than what you will get from "PTS" and like Bruce said the customer serivce is the best bar nun. TCI also has good stuff as well but are somewhat limited on what they offer but what they do have is good.
As for the difference from the run of the mill 2004r and the performance ones are: Basics- valve body, govenor and servo. To tell you what the vb differeces are would be beyond the scope of this, regular can be modified but you would have to send it to Bruce or buy one out right for about $500 I think, the gov. is for different shift points also can be easily modified to your preferance and the servo is larger for better 2nd gear holding but most go with an even larger billet servo to accomidate more performance. If you are interested in a good core you want a BR, BQ, CZ, KZ, OZ TA all will be a good starting one. If you do enough searching on here you find most of what you need but don't hesitate to ask. The parts Bruce sells and the ones he builds far exceed the performance of a BRF and all the mods are for performance and also durability. The main thing is the vb if you can acuire one of the listed one's or even just the vb everthing else can be purchased or modified to meet and beat the stock BRF.

If it is even close to the heat in MD - forget that grass, somebody could get hurt! It is too hot to even prepare to garage for the operation - yuk!!!

I will be pullin' the trans in about two weeks. Does it make sense to do an initial inspection before ordering parts? It seems like if it needs lots of "hard parts" it might be better to start with something else.

Bruce, I be giving you a call.

Mark, I sort of thought the video would be as you described and as this wil be my first trans job, I believe it would be good just to be even more comfortable with what I am about to attempt. Would you recomend all of the manuals you mention? Also, how much and where is that stuff available?
Bruce? I recall you said you stock the ATSG Manual.

Just want to be sure I will have enough detail so that I don't try to put a part, seal, bushing, bearing....in backwards - or something.

Thanks for the help!

Yes I got the manuals. And yes good idea to tear down first then order. Let us know.. Bruce

Yes inspection is a must, not sure what you meant by "start with something else"?

The video is about $30 and manuals are $20 or less ATSG are all for stock, and all of them can gotten from www.jcwhitney.com among other on line book store and auto parts stores all except GM manual is alittle harder to find. If you can't easiliy find them give me an e-mail and I will help.
