pop the MAF hose off and see if it turns effortlessly with your fingers. Also check and see if the compressor wheel has cam in contact with the housing.

I pulled the exhaust elbow off and it turns freely. There is a little bit of up and down movement in the turbine wheel like the bushings are starting to wear. Not sure how much movement is normal for these cars.

Can you buy replacement wheels and shafts for these turbos?

Brandon

Up and down motion is normal when the engine isn't running. You just don't want it loose either wheel can contact the housing and you don't want any 'in and out' play (giggity).

Did you look at the compressor wheel on the intake side too?

Yeah - I remember that snipe hunt / process so fondly.
Hopefully you don't find one of these in your exhaust housing.

Mine spun freely as well.
Until it didn't

Yes you can rebuild your own turbo. Is it stock? It looks like a stocker. Call Precision Turbo in Indiana or Limit Engineering in Arizona. Tell them what you need and they will give you the best advice since that's what they do. I rebuilt my stocker and it was fine.

So I pulled the turbo and pulled the exhaust side apart. It looks like a rat ate part of the wheel.
The only thing I can think of is that some slag from welding was hanging on in it, then broke loose when I fired it up.

Well - at least you found it.
Another unsolved mystery solved.
Feel for your turbine - sorry.
I got lucky and even with a washer in there - the blades were miraculously untouched.

That must have been some crack that got welded to have (that much) slag inside the header

Dood - I was just going to say - "And to think - Bryan didn't even get a chance to predict (with the mystery of a Mediterranean bazaar fortune teller) "I predict a new turbo in your future"
You missed your chance completely on this one.
It was a perfect soft pitch, and you weren't even around to swing - let alone miss.
You're slipping. :D

could of had been the hole I burned in it and welded up.

Ahh....is that one of those "Expensive Lessons Learned" categories on Jeopardy then..:(
For $300 - Expensive Lessons Learned - please Alex
"What is - burning a hole through your header and filling it with slag Alex?
