what is the bare bones easiest way to do this with the motor in the car?? Tommorow Im gonna try and get the Intake off and ses what i can see. Is there a special tool I need? when i do get in there whats a tell tale sign the lifter(s) are bad? thats my gameplan right now. new lifters and vale springs and maybe get the heads rebuilt if $ is ok. Im not lookin for HIGH performance i just thought WHY NOT?? Duh if I aint drivin it for a while why not upgrade? Any way the motor is gonna be in the car all the time seein as i have a carport (stupid Maryland), any way enough ramblin. takin sugestions on internal upgrades. cam, lifters already got 979 springs.........

Remove intake, rocker-arm shafts, and pushrods (keep pushrods in order so you can put them back in the same).
Lifters pull out. There is a lifter removal tool sold at any parts store. Shouldnt cost very much, especially at a place like Auto Zone (where you may be able to rent them if you want). If you dont have one you still should be able to snatch them out using a pair of needle nose pliers or screw driver. Grab them by the clip on the top. Get them up just enough then grab with your fingers. Its sometimes easiest to get them moving freely by spinning them around when pulling them up. Pulling the lifters is not hard at all. After having the intake off you'll see, there right there ripe for the plucking :) .
As far as wear. Look at the bottom of the lifter(s). Look for pitting. Also, there should not be any depression or cupped shape (caused by lifter not rotating). Lifter should be flat or even have a slight dome (if not also check the cam lobes, which could have problems). Also check the sides of the lifter for wear, scratches, abrasions (if sides are worn also check the lifter bore in the block). Remember cam, pushrods, and lifter guide(bore) all contact the lifter, so make sure all are okay.

You will probaby have about $300 or so in headwork if you go that route - but why? Buick heads are not known for excessive wear. Based on your questions Im not as quick as perhaps I normally might to encourage this type of work for you in this situation.

Are there noises that indicated a problem you want to check into? Other than wanting to replace the lifters there is no need to pull the intake.

Unless I missed something, how bout just doing the springs for now?

welp, GN, I posted a couple of weeks ago about a pinging/ticking noise that kinda runs in tandem with the exhaust tone stuttering. I was and am leaning more toward the lifter on the #5 cylinder exhaust. I mine as well replace all of em while im there. got the springs cheap from a gift card i had to summit, and since the car is now my "project" and not daily driver Im gonna do what i can 1 thing at a time. A head job :D , might be in the near future too.
