replacing timing chain

Hey, zam70 and I arE going to be replacing my timing chain soon and I am going to replace the stock chain with a rollermaster timing chain. what else do I need (other than a gasket) other than the chiain? I dont want to get everything apart and find out that I need some little wigit that has to be ordered.
Also, where is the best place to buy a rollermaster on the internet?

Since you are down there anyway, you may want to replace the water pump, as it is cheap and easy. Ditto the serpentine belt(4060635). Also the rear main seal(231839), rear main side seal(24500058) and front crank seal(2724) while you have the pan off. Not sure what brand these part numbers are for.

Just go buy a $15 parts store timing chain and get a new tensioner, spring and a roller button. Autozone carries everything you need. Roller chains have proven to be more problem than they are worth. When you rebuilt the motor with ported heads, girdle, etc. then think about spending more than $20 on a timing chain.

While at the parts store, get one of those timing chain replacement gasket kits with the neoprene front seal. Also, get a 20 bolt pan gasket while you are there. Dropping the pan is the only way to ensure you got all the antifreeze out (that runs down the front of the block).

you need to order the roller cam button from GM-

advanced auto sells the FELPRO front cover kit will include-

timing gasket,water pump gasket,crank seal gasket,upper vacuum pod gasket for t-body i dont know why it comes with the kit??

when you pull the pan, pull the oil pickup tube and clean it out or replace it, advanced sells them too-
do the neoprime rear main seal at the same time, A.V. AND NAPA SELL THEM-

get some black rtv to squeeze between the rear cap and block-

dont use any sealer on the oil pan gasket-

im pretty sure you do AWAY with the stock timing chain tensioner when you put in a new chain-
i know for a FACT you do away with the stock tensioner when you use the NAPA/Advanced timing chain

ive been using those cheap ass 20.00 timing chains in mid to low 11 second cars for a few years- no probs yet-

your going to need a cam sensor setting tool-

torque wrench for 219 LBS on the balancer

piece of wire to get the old rear main seal out-

oil, antifreeze, filter,ect ect ect-

oh, and BEER when you finish up

the only odd part i see is the damper

i dont know what that is, maybe another name for the oil sling?
definitely not the balancer-

make sure you use an impact gun and locktite on the harmonic balancer bolt. A few I know didn't use an impact gun and their bolt wiggled free. Very important.

Autozone sells a roller cam button for $11. The damper is the rubber part of the tensioner. The other part is a spring.

You should use a tensioner with a non-roller timing chain. Roller timing chains can eat the damper and the bits can clog your oil pickup.

GNttype.org is the best info for this procedure as you probably also need to reset the cam sensor when you are done.

OK- so how the **** are you going to set the impact gun for 219 ft lbs?


my IR 231 is 500 ft lbs forward, so if i hit it, and add locktight, i may never get it off-

i dont think suggesting that to anyone is a good idea

Damper vs tensioner

When you're at the parts store don't ask for a tensioner. The guy behind the counter will probably tell you they don't carry it or it's not listed. The correct name for it it is the "dampener" as stated above. I went to three parts stores before I got a guy who knew what I was talking about and said "We have the dampener in stock, but no tensioners." Mine came with the spring.

i called napa again [ turbo regal buddy works there] and they cant find that part number in the system-

i assume the napa you are buying from is a jobber napa which allows them to buy from another wholesaler and resell-

obviously that part fits our cars, but what car did the roller cam button come from?

i assume from a newer FWD 3800?

if anyone knows the correct application, then maybe in the future i can get my cam buttons from napa...
