I figured I would share my restore Project with everyone.. Since my motor is out being built, seemed like a pretty good time to do this.. Please share any caveats you or anyone has experienced doing this.. Since I am really good at tearing things apart the rebuilding and putting back together will most likely be a challenge.. I have just finished striping the guts out... Next weekend begins the sanding and body..

I am pretty much getting new everything in terms of carpet, trim, headlight bezels..

Feel free to comment..

I know what you are going through as I am currently doing a Frame up restoration on my 87. Taking them apart is the easy part, getting them back to normal is another. I have the body off on saw horses at this point
I would say you have a good start there, the key is to take your time and be patient with the project.
I will be setting up a website soon showing the restoration Process.
It's a nice looking car you have there, It will be worth it when finished.

:D

I did a semi restoration on my 87 GN
I am currently doing the same to an 86 T-type the bonus with the T-type is it was already painted.

Out of curiosity how did you get the body up onto saw horses?
Let us know when your web site is up & running, looking foward to viewing a complete resteration.
I will have one it all to the T-type when its done.
I usually just lift the body off the frames enogh for what I need to do never had one on saw horses before. Just wondering what your stradigy was............................Thanks:)

I am not taking it off the frame.. But I am removing all overlapping peices such as trim, windows, or whatever so I can hopefully get a good coverage without worrying about the creases...

I used floor jacks, long steel boxed tubing, and four strong freinds. We just inched it up front to back like a see-saw till I got the height. The Boxed tubing runs under the body and is on top of two saw horses in the front. The back we used the same method but used 3 stacked rims with tires per side for height in the back. Worked out ok only about 1" height difference front to back and it is really strong.

It will be a long process as I have more ideas than money.

smallv6,

Did you want to swap frames on my car for me!!!

Did you have any problems with the body mounts since the bolts have never been off in 15 years?? Are there any other "hidden" things you have to watch for when you lift the body from the frame?? How?? Where?? did you put the jacks to lift the body?? I was thinking of using a hoist or something to lift the body off the frame!!!

You can run into problems while doing body bushings.
From my experience's in doing replacing these bushings is that the 2 busings on either side of the car behind the rear wheels can be the worst. Keep in mind water/salt has been shot up there everytime the car was in the rain/snow making it the prime spot to rust.
I have replaced these several times my cars and customers and everyone I had at least 1 mount break, The mount that holds the piece of metal breaks from rust, usually as you are taking the botts out thats when it breaks. What that mount does is keeps the plate they have in the body (thats threaded to accept the body bolt) from spinning.
If they would have used stainless steel parts in this location the problem would not be there.

There's ways to fix the problems which I have come up with but but everytime is different it just depends what happens when you take them out..............Good Luck :)
