Are there any potential problems in reusing a converter that has been in a transmission that doesn't have any forward or reverse gears. The tranny shop I took it to said they would check the converter and I could probably reuse it. I'm not sure what is exactly wrong with the tranny but I am having a completely different one installed. Is this wise? Why/why not?

I just had my tranny rebuilt. I had my converter cut open, checked, cleaned, put back together and balanced. The cost was $125. I was told any of the junk that was in a failed transmission was in the converter and unless I had a new converter or the current one cleaned, I may void my warrenty.

It's not really a good idea especially since you are not going to rebuild the original transmission. You really don't know what's in there.

Do yourself a favor and at least pull the transmission pan off the broken transmission. See what's lurking in there. Chances are, if all you broke was the forward clutch shaft, the converter may be OK. That doesn't generate trash and the fluid will be clean.

If, however, the transmission pump failed, the converter is contaminated with metal particles.

Thanks for the info. I got my car to the shop and the converter spline is toast. So much for reusing it. Now the search is on for a affordable quality converter.
