RIPPED OFF online, small claims court?

You can see my ongoing battle with a board member by reading the post in the Feedback forum. I want to step this up a notch and take the guy to small claims court. I have never had to do this before so I am looking for suggestions. My brother-in-law is a lawyer and gave me a few tips, but I am still looking for feedback from anyone who has gone through small claims court before. I just want to get my money back.

Allot of states have reciprical agreements w/ other states that allows you to file a claim in your local court, and force the other party to appear in your backyard, not his. This alone, can make him more agreeable to a settlement....Ask the BIL about that.
