I have just bought a used TA-49 turbo used. It has unknown Precision housing. I don't know if it is a 75 or 82 exhaust housing. It is little slow in spooling. I am using a Orange stripe converter. I know I don't have any exhaust leaks. My friend suggested it might be the way I have my RJC boost controller and wastegate adjusted. I have the RJC boost controller unscrewed as far as I can, and my wastegate rod tight. I don't want to make more than 19-20 lbs of boost. My friend suggested that I tighten up the Rjc boost controller and loosen up the wastegate rod. I'm looking for quicker spool, but no more than 19-20lbs of boost. Any help would be appreciated. I called Jason, but he is out of town until Monday.

Yes... loosen up the WG rod and use the RJC as your boost controler. I found out it works much better, spoolup for me now is alomst instant.

I agree totally.
I'll assume you have a standard spring wastegate actuator, if so, loosen your wg rod so that it's 1 - 2 full turns from static. Static meaning you don't have to pull on it to get it onto the swing arm. On a standard actuator, 1 turn = 2 half turns, 2 turns = 4 half turns, etc etc. With the RJC valve turned back so that it's barely attached but not falling apart, your boost should be at around 17-18psi at this setting. Now, tighten the RJC valve one full revolution at a time until you have your boost set where you want it. I found that 1 full turn on the RJC valve equates to 1psi increase in boost on a standard spring wastegate actuator on a TE-60R turbo. This should help with your spool up, as a TA-49 with a PTE .63 turbine housing, needs a converter that can flash stall to 2800 minimum. The Orange stripe converters typically would flash to around 2400-2500, but foot brake up to around 2700-2800. Meaning, it's still a little tight, but people have run them for years with TA-49s. The PTE turbine housing has a part number that is CNC cut into the downpipe flange face of the housing.
Here is a picture used for example only to show the P/N location.

There are two housings available from PTE for a TA-49.
THB3-31 = .63 A/R Buick 3-bolt housing.
THB5-31 = .85 A/R Buick 3-bolt housing.

It is very rare to see a TA-49 with an .85 A/R housing, as they typically only build them with the .63 housing. Unless someone has installed that housing themselves, my bet is it's really a .63 and your converter is just a little too tight to spool it up super fast.
Adjusting your actuator and setting the RJC valve will definitely help with the spool up.

RJC boost controller adjustment

Right now I have the RJC boost controller adjusted so that it is about 3 turns from falling apart. Being that I want no more than 19lbs of boost, should I go ahead and tighten it down to about half way and make the wastegate arm looser so that it easily attaches to the swing arm without pulling on it?

Go for it. You do want to have just a little bit of snugness on the wastegate rod tho. IOW, barely pull it onto the swing arm. Just be careful the first time you get on it, as you don't know exactly what the boost will be. If you do this and test, and the boost only goes to 17psi, then turning the RJC valve 2 full revolutions, should net 2 more psi.
Hope this helps and let us know your results.

exhaust housings

After talking with a expert, who will remain un-named, the problem I am experiencing is because someone paired the Precision exhaust housing with a relatively small turbo (TA-49). The stock Garrett exhaust housing, machined out to fit the TA-49 would give me the throttle reponse I am seeking. The Precision housing works better on a bigger turbo, apparently.

garret, the precision housing .63 is the standard housing on the ta49 turbo now and will outflow and make more power then the garret .63.there is no problem with mating a pte 63 with a smaller wheel like a ta49 many on this board run that combo and are very successful.i myself run a ta49 and i've had several different housings on the turbo.that orange stripe should be enough to spool the pte63-49 however if you prefer a slightly better spool the garret 63 will provide that feel you may be looking for.before swapping housings i would play with the tune
