You can't always tell on thses kind of failures. If for instance the prior motor had a cam failure and the oil cooler didn't get cleaned out you would run a bunch of debris thru the new motor. If the engine hadn't been properly pre-oiled and started dry that couldn't help either. One way or another it's ugly. I feel for your friend. I hope it doesn't cost too much to fix.

That destruction looks exactly like an engine failure I had, when using a "ported" oil pump, from another shop.
"Porting" was grinding the ports so thin, that the pressure side was leaking back into the feed side.
The engine made the start up, a trip to Reynolds, [not raced], and about 1/2 the way home. It finished the trip on the trailer.
$3K later, I had done the rebuild.. Including replacing a brand new crank....

Roger that. I haven''t pulled the oil pump apart yet but from the looks of the port work on the heads that's a good possibility.

Update: Crank ended up being cracked and the line bore was all over the place. Rods had to be ground and re rounded. This thing was a mess..

Non the less the motor is back in the car and running. Thanks to Ray Romito for the machine work. He is a great guy.

Here are some pics I snapped along the way.
