You can't always tell on thses kind of failures. If for instance the prior motor had a cam failure and the oil cooler didn't get cleaned out you would run a bunch of debris thru the new motor. If the engine hadn't been properly pre-oiled and started dry that couldn't help either. One way or another it's ugly. I feel for your friend. I hope it doesn't cost too much to fix.
