This is really getting old. About every three to four months I pull the guns out to clean and I’ve noticed the last year and half I got spots of rust on several guns. When I put them away in April I put a thick coat of oil on them. Today I pulled them out and they were worse than ever. Don’t get me wrong its minimal but any rust is too much. The safe is not real big. Maybe 18in x 18in x 48in. I run one golden rod. Today I added a trouble light with a 60 watt bulb. I also have one of those things that go from blue to pink as they absorb moisture. Its in the oven now and I will put it in shortly.
Any suggestions as to what else I should do? Safe is in the basement in the furnace room. I’ve never had water nor has it ever felt or smelt even the slightest bit damp in there. I guess I could put a dehumidifier down there anyway.

You might want to consider looking into your cleaning process, fluids & such, your oiling process, chemicals, oils, greases, & the acidity in your system. Wearing soft cotton gloves when cleaning & oiling the guns might help. I would think that the safe being in the basement with the furnace could have something to do with it. Also, you mentioned that this has just happened within the last year or so. Any changes in the humidity in general in your area in the last couple of years or so. A humidity indicator in the basement or in the safe might indicate something. HTH.

Is it possible that your cleaning fluid, if any used, your oil used, or your grease used could have become contaminated? I clean my firearms with Hoppe's # 9 Nitro Solvent, wipe with clean cloth until dry, oil all wear contact surfaces with CLP lubricant, & apply a topcoat on top of the oil consisting of Outers "Gunslick" grease. Do the rust and / or contamination spots ever look like or take the shape of fingerprints?

if none of those work... just buy some desiccant from lowes and put it in your safe.. it will suck up and absorb the moisture
