Dealing with 95 S-10 4-cyl (2.2) with a no start condition. Have not searched for codes yet, but here's the kicker: disconnect the battery, reset the ecm and it will eventually fire. Any ideas where I need to start looking first (ecm, crank sens, etc?) before I freeze my tail off troubleshooting?

Are you getting any spark?

Is the fuel pump putting out any thing?

We will assume that he compression is good(You didn't do anything crazy to loose compression did you?)

Well, when I went out to fool with it Fri night the dam thing fired off every time, so I can't answer that-the part that is throwing me is the bit about disconnecting the battery for a minute or two, reconnecting it and it would start. There are no codes stored in it I can tell you that much.

Maybe the crank sensor, theres also a small harness that goes from the crank sensor to the module/coil they are known for going bad. When you get it to no start wiggle it and see if it fires. It's about $20 at the dealer.

Wrecker will be there Monday morning. We were shorthanded for the weekend, back to full staff Monday.

That actually makes sense, especially given how random this problem seems to be. I'll throw $20 at it on a hunch, then if that doesn't work then it's time to turn it over to the pros. I'm guessing this sensor is in the front cover somewhere adjacent to the balancer?

Sensor is on the right side of the block, kind of in the middle. Look for the module/coil and follow the wires to the crank sensor.

My guess is the ECM. I have never seen a sensor cause that kind of problem, but I have seen GM computers do really wierd stuff. My 02.

I've considered the ecm, but wouldn't there be a code or two stored, even if those codes turn out to be bogus?

No, most of the computers I've replaced did not set a code. Some would not start below a certain temp, would die if they hit a hard bump, stall when the A/C was turned on...ect

does this truck have a anti-theft device pass key ? if so by disconnecting the battery could have reset it?

I think that model eats headgaskets. Just make sure it's not leaking into the cylinders and covering the plugs.

You're right, they have been known to blow headgaskets. I may get a wild hair and run a compression check just for hoots and giggles, but I'm 98% convinced it's an electrical gremlin, at least this time....
