Hello fellow TBers. tryin to sand prime and paint my now chrome bumpers to black. i have the paint and i have the primer. i also got 400 grit and 1000 grit sand paper. now i know i start with the 400 grit wet sand, the question is do i need to also dry sand with the 400 as well. then finish up with the 1000 grit wet and dry. im a lil confused may be some one has done this already and can shed a lil light on this for me. thanks again.

I haven't seen much luck for painting over chrome,it just doesn't get a good bite to last long.

paint

only luck i ever had was to sand blast the chrome in order for the primer to stick, even with a self etching primer it hard to get any thing to stick to chrome

thanks for the info guys. i will see how it goes will post pics of the finished product.

bodywork

If you use something like ppg epoxy dp90 you can use it to go over treated bare metal and as a sealer top coat when you reduce it.This is not a primer.

if you need some more advice you can call me 774 930 4156 joe

you sand the primer with 400 wet and the clear coat with 1000 wet after a few days. there is no need to dry sand the primer with 400.

i've painted tons of chrome. sometimes it works out , sometimes it doesn't. chrome is just not meant to be painted. here's how i try to do it.

sandblast the piece, gives a better bite for primer.
use a light coat of ecthing primer, can even be sem from a spray can
yes expoxy primer

then a try for 2-3 thick coats of a 2k primer, i think it gives cushion for the paint if it gets hit.

then paint

that's how i've been doing it, and it last.
