Satellite Laptop Computer

Hey, does anyone know whether or not there are so-called true Satellite Laptop Computers on the market. I don't mean wireless internet and wireless router type stuff. I mean one that truly works off of the Satellite (i.e. pull the antenna out and waaaaalaaaaa). I seen one of these in a movie but don't know if it actually exists in real life. I go to a lot of places where there is no connection and this would be sweeeeeeeeeet!

Dave, I read your post on the other board and I hope I'm not confusing myself. I've included the link below. I'm thinking this gentleman is referencing a "like Satellite connection" that is not wireless like a simple wireless connection you can install at home. Yes, I mean something like a Satellite phone connection but can be used with a computer. On this movie I saw, this guy pulled out this antenna on his laptop and said he was on the internet. Now I don't know if that is just a movie (blah blah blah) but I am going to find out.

am I correct in thinking flipmo wants cell phone like service on his laptop? Then yes there are solutions for the normal user. I work for IBM/AT&T and we have HP laptops that have wireless WAN cards built into them already. You just need the service that accompanies them.

For a true satellite broadband internet, that you can use any where, without a 12" dish on your laptop, it is going to be a few more years.

Dont forget the Sat phones..Buddy of mine carries one in his plane and in a pinch it can be used for internet access, with serial cable..expensive and slow, but it works

Maybe if he lives in a city or near a major highway, but there are still large areas of the country that still don't have even wireless cell service.

He was specifically asking about satellite (like an iridium Satellite phone).

Hughes has Satellite internet but you need an 18" dish pointed precisely at a geosynchronous satellite to receive it, so its not like you can pop a card in a laptop and receive it.

Got It From Verizon Today

O.K. all and thanks for the responses. Well, I have came very close in finding a capability like what I was looking for (i.e. Satellite Connection). I called Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon and they all had a technology similar to what I was looking for. I decided to go with Verizon because the device and setup was free (hey hey). I bought it right out of the store.

It is called "VZAccess" which is basically a broadband internet access device that simply plugs right into a USB port and kind of works like a wireless router type deal in your house. But, the trick with this is, you don't have to be around a wireless router or even be able to connect to a router. This device allows you to connect in some of the remote of remote areas and uses the signal from a radio, television, telephone, etc... tower. As long as you are in the impact zone of "a" tower you are good to go.

Trust me, I am currently in a remote area right now (no, I'm not a spy) and this thing kicks butt and is working prefectly fine and is fast and I'm not currently connecting to someone's wireless router either. It is totally a standalone type of service and device.
