Make sure you do this on a weekday when the banks are OPEN.

Call the bank who supposedly issued the check (name of the bank on the check, as him ahead of time who he banks with)

Look up the number of HIS bank that issued the check and bring that telephone number with (and a gun in case he's a theif and freaks out on you)

You MUST call the bank who issued the check and verify with them that it is vaild. I actually recommend that if it's a national bank you meet at one so you can go INSIDE.

Cashiers checks can be fake and will still take a week or so to clear, regardless! The stop payment is for him NOT YOU!!!

You cannot "stop payment" on something someone is paying to you!!!

I dont know what these guys are saying.

DO NOT call the telephone number on the front of the check, it could be a front to act like the bank... make sure you have the banks ACTUAL phone number. I would recommend just meeting inside one though.

If you think this is crazy, I received a $5,000 fake cashiers check that had the telephone number to the "bank" on it. It sounded like a bank, they verified the funds, they knew the amount and who it was written out to... BECAUSE IT WAS A SCAM.

I had a bad feeling about it, so I went to the bank that supposedly issued the check and found out it was a fake, so I did not get screwed!!

Having just sold my 84 Z28, you can play it safe like I did. I demanded cash payment. Before they arrived I went to my local bank and asked for one of those "fake bill pens". That way, I could pick some bills at random from the stack and swipe them as I was counting. Buyer didn't mind (better not have). I got the cash, he drove away in his new car with signed over title and bill of sale in hand.
Would I drive that far to deliver it? Absolutely not! Anybody wants my car(s) bad enough, they come and get them.

Like the dude that bought my Z28. He and his Dad drove all the way from Delaware to loook. Liked what they saw, payed.
