Scanmaster or caspers knock gage, what do you believe first?Sometimes when I get on it in 2nd gear the boost will get up to around 15lbs. the scanmaster wont show anything but the caspers knock gage will start to go into the red lights, and I'll let off right away, last thing I want to do is head gaskets. I just got the chip Jim Testa made for my setup and I'm gonna put it in first thing tomorrow morning. I'll let you know if I see any difference.
What do you guys watch first? Oh, thats runnung 93 octane gas. Thanks
Tarey D. :)

well I know I have both like you and the scanmaster will show a 2 or 3 sustained and it will give a couple of green lights on the knock gauge, according to the knock gauge I am always ok no matter what the scanmaster says?which to believe, maybe more people will post and answer for the both of us.My knock also changes for the worse the longer I test the car .I don't know if the knock is in relation to the intercooler heating up or water temps?Seems to knock more with my 50's on the back...I have no idea?

I just have a Scanmaster on the dash. Sits above the heater controls.

DON'T everybody speak up at one time, come on you guys, give us some HELP here. :o :o :o   Thanks Tarey D.

If it were me and I had to choose due to finances or what ever, go with the scanmaster. This will an excellent tool not only for knock but for tunning also. Although it does not record, it makes one heck of a tunning tool. Knock gauge only tells you knock. Sometimes hard to see what the problem is when you only have 1 tenth of the data. Hope this input helps.

I already have both of them, I want to know which one to believe first, because they don't work at the same time so far???? Tarey D.

Go off of the SM II ! Only let 3.0 degrees or less of KR and in high 3rd 0.0KR. That is just a generalization for alot of us.

ScanMaster II

Upon enter P.E. mode (Or is it over 3.0 TPS volts? I can’t remember), ScanMaster WILL record the highest KNR reading and the Lowest O2. By pressing both the recall and mode buttons at the same time, you will see the MPH where the previous readings were recorded. A great feature!

PLUS, monitoring all the other sensors is a big plus for SM. From money vs feature perspective, the ScanMaster gives you the best value.

---However----

The original question, I believe, was when you run BOTH (a SM and Knock gauge, where the SM isn't showing knock, but the gauge itself is) which one is telling the REAL story!

I don't run both, so I can't offer any confirmation that this is a normal or unusual deal. But that won't stop me from offering an opinion!

To be honest, the SM is only reporting what the ECM is adjusting for, not the actual knock reading. Also, the "Sample Rate" on the SM/ECM is way slower, so you may just be seeing knock SOONER on the gauge, and it may take a few frames before you see what action is being taken to reduce the knock. That may be your difference. The SM is not reporting the knock, but actions taken by the ECM to reduce it! The gauge is more "Real Time", so if you left your foot in it longer, SM readings would eventually correspond to those on the gauge... They would have to, since the same sensor is used.

In other words, you are attempting to compare Apples to Oranges. SM reports Degrees of timing reduction. Your gauge reports Knock Severity. They are RELATED, but are not the same units, and are not displayed at the same rate.

well my car has it backwards because I will get a 2-4 degrees of retard on the scanmaster and the gauge hardly does a thing.I mean I sometimes see a couple of green lights and maybe an amber from time to time but when the scanmaster says 4-5 the knock gauge sometimes reacts.I have tested the knock gauge and it works like it should. It recieves a signal directly from the knock sensor, I believe or is it the esc module?Any way the scanmaster recieves its signal every 1.4 seconds from the ecm so I guess the knock gauge is more "real time".But I still don't understand why I have perfect o2's and my blm is fine and I will sometimes show a 3-4 knock retard in 3rd on the scanmaster?by the way if the blm is over 150 then you need to lean it up or richen it up?no matter how high I turn my fuel pressure the blm still runs from 136-148 at WOT.I thought a blm over 128 at throttle means the ecm trying to lean out the mix.
