i went to the local Sherwin Williams paint store today and they had Denatured Alcohol in a big tin can for like $10.89 with lower prices available through a business account. is this the right stuff to use in my alky kit? just makin sure i get the right kind.

Next time you are in Sherwin Williams, ask for a 5 gallon jug of Xylene or Toulene. They will probably look at you as some kind of crackhead. I got the story at my local SW the last time i bought xylene. Apparently, in some 'ghettos,' you can go to a xylene or toulene house, pay a fee, and they give you the chemical on a rag. you get to sit around huffing the rag, killing brain cells. Sounded like a waste of perfectly good 117 octane to me.

Damn.......I pay $8.99 at my local home depo and Lowes.

Hey Cory

I get my Xylene, (for the gas tank), at Bert Lowe Supply Co. in Tampa, it's $19.00 for 5 gallons. I've never priced denatured alky there but I bet they would have it cheap. There are an industrial supply company. See ya in a week - BB

cool, thx 4 the info. ill have to check into their prices. $19 for 5 gallons seems like a real good price. heck, if this war keeps going like it is it might be cheaper to run xylene than gas, LOL:eek: cya later:)

Toluene at walmart here 1.49 a gallon... Mixed 4 gallons of that with some 87 octane. Smoked three 5.0s this evening w/ that mix....

 A sales person must have marked it wrong. I have never found toluene for less than 5 a gallon.

shhh.. don't say anything then.. :) b/c not just here in Bowling Green, KY but also down in Murfreesboro, TN, as well as up in Florence, KY... within just a few cents of each other....

Jesus, 1.49? That's cheaper than gas!

WalMart may be just "flushing" their warehouses existing inventories of toluene. They may be moving ahead of the curve of some tighter upcoming EPA regs for certain chemicals.

You really might want to stock up at those prices. :)

I went to WalMart today and at the mention of the word "Toluene" all of the store employees just had a dumbfound look. I'm assuming that toluene is not a brand name but is a chemical. What exactly is the intended use as Walmart would sell it? ie; what would it be around? What exactly am I looking for?

paint thinner... its in a clear plastic bottle, contains toluene, its in small print on the back, its the main ingredient. naturally the individual component ingredients are listed too, but they are all part of it.... i think the industry has caught onto it b/c they say on it "DO not use as fuel".. must be a gas tax issue. but it is basically the same kind of hydrocarbon chain in toluene as in gasoline...
