Ok I know you guys are tired of me and this question, but for the life of me I can't figure it out and the car is to hit the road in a week and I need this resolved.

The problem I had was the car would shift out of park without pressing the buton on the shifter, found that the spring mechanism was broken. Went to junk yard and replaced the whole shift stalk with one out of an older regal.

Additionally the car would not shift below overdrive. Found an aftermarket shift cable had been used and frayed within the jacket. It was getting caught and stopping the shifter from moving. Replaced with GM part.

Now my problem is when the car is in P it reads reverse. This obvioulsy allows the car to shift out of park without the button being pressed. When it reverse it reads neutral. The whole way down the reading is one gear off, this obviously will not allow the car to go into gear 1.

What in the heck is causing this???????? I have made all adjustments I know to make with no resolution.

Cable adjustment, or maybe the coat hanger that GM used for the linkage is bent. Mine bends all the time when using the trans-brake. The stock shifter is a POS.

Finally figured what the issue was after racking my brain for what appears to be forever.

I replaced the shifting mechanism with a new one fromthe junk yard. The issue was the car I took the shifter from did not have overdirive. As a result the mounting points for the shifter are different than those on the original shifter, shifting the whole thing forward maybe 1/4 inch. So I simply took the new used chrome stalk and put it in the old shifter base and no more issues. How simple a fix and how frustrating to have taken so long.

Oh well, all ready to go now.
