With the cam sensor installed and bolted down, cap off, should I be able to move shaft up/down at all? Should the wave spring be completely compressed or should there be some clearance thus movement?
I could not move the shaft up or down before I removed it, is this normal?

Mine have always had a little up/down movement...even brand new ones I installed...

Hey thanks, but if mine does not have any free movement up/down, what can I check out to find out why?

Wouldn't the end play on a cam sensor be similar to that on a distributer? After all, the cam sensor sits in the hole once used by the older distributers and is driven the same way. There needs to be some clearance so that the gears don't gall, but there is probably an optimum number, I would guess about .020 inches.

So is it necessary to shim these things? Where do you buy shims if that is required?

paul

You usually shim them when the spring washer wears and they get noisy...can get shims from Jegs...not sure what the clearance should be...do a search in the archives...plenty of info on it...but if yours isn't moving up/down at all it seems as though something isn't right...there needs to be some movement...so with the cam sensor installed and clamped down if you pull up on the interruptor ring it doesn't move?...what cam do you have in there?...

Scott, I have a new stock cam and stock set of oil pump gears.
That is correct, before I removed the cam sensor I thought I would check to see if I had clearance (since my cam sensor ticks quite a bit on start) and it did not, could not push down or pull up. Seems like there should be some.

end play

I believe .008----.014 is what is called for. There is a wave washer on the bottom. There is also a flat washer under the cup (top of shaft ) You do not have to have the wave washer. I have shimmed at both places. .500 shaft dia.

Ok, but the only place I heard to get the shims is Jegs? Do they come in a set of varying thicknesses? Thanks
