This winter I'm thinking of installing a new, stronger tranny. I don't feel my original, unmolested 84,000mi tranny is up to the task if I add more power. I have been told I am right at the limit. I'm trying to plan ahead here.

Should I hold onto my original tranny and have it *built* and keep it on hand as a spare?

How much is an original, working tranny worth as credit towards a stronger unit?

A "working" trans is likely worth no more as a core than 1 w/ issues. [Both would still have to be rebuilt.] Suggest you ask the vendor you plan to deal with...

Thanks for the advice. What I'm trying to get at here is.. Should I just keep the one I have instead of using it as a core? Yes,I'm one of those guys who stashes stuff away.

If the vendor wants $300 extra if I don't give him mine as a core, should I just keep it?

Maybe this is a non-issue? ...but at least I know the history of it's internals and the case. Mine was babied nearly all of it's life.

Im always a fan of having spares on hand. Especially with things like trannys turbos another car lol. Are you doing a new converter w new trans? If so then def keep it. If you blow up new one but want to use that converter in old tranny youll have 2 no good trannies. :D

Yes,I will be changing converters. The tranny works good. It's had fluid changes all of it's life and has really never been abused. It's just that the internals are not strong enough for my plans.

Id keep it then. Just bc if your break new trans u can throw in the old one as a temp. Idk I love driving my car so whwn its laid up I hate it

Keep it, I have the original engine and tranny from my car stored for someday returning to stock.

You've heard of numbers matching especially in the high-end Muscle cars and vettes. No sense in giving yours away for $300 this way your kids can get top dollar when they unload it after they put you in a home. Or at least that's what mine tell me.
