Correct me if Im wrong... arent all 87 Grand National without side moulding? Did they make some with it?

Mine has nice side molding which has plastic end caps on it so I'm assuming it was factory. My friends 86 has cut ends and stuck on molding so I'm again assuming is was dealer installed.

I believe it was an option. I seen an ultra low mileage { approx. 200 miles} G.N. amd it did not have body side moldings. It for sure was an option on my WE4.

What was the option number?? Mine has side molding and was thinking about removing it when I first got the car but it is RIVETED to the body.

i am almost positive it was B88

but i will check when i get home

The factory is the aluminum channel with rubber insert...and it IS riveted. When my car was redone I chose to reinstall it...looks better than a honkin big door ding.

Mine is the aluminum channel with rubber insert but I don't have the B88 code on my trunk label. B88 is the correct option according to Kirban's book.

I do have a B89 option listed but don't know what that is??

Does anyone know where to get a piece of the rubber that goes in the channel??? Mine is about an inch or two too short on the door for some reason

So far as I know, the OEM moldings are stick on, and there is no riveted alumium channel. All 4 of the TRs I've owned have been stick on. All have been 87s. Maybe they did something different in 86, or more likely, your moldings are aftermarket.

Kirban's book has a good discussion on this on P. 227-8. Bottom line, lots of TRs appear to have aftermarket moldings...

My 87 was built with the B88 moldings and they were rubber stick-on type too.

Slim finding the rubber insert piece that hasn't shrunk over time is tough. I've sold several pieces to customers that just cut a piece off & put it in place of the missing molding. We've got a few of the long portions for the doors now if you need a piece. I've always thought the stick-on version is the correct moldings for our cars. Our TR's are also unmodified, so I know they came from Flint with the non-rivet molding.

I believe B89 is, Ornamentation: Rear window molding revealed colored.

Stick on moldings were the correct factory ones. :)

Maybe on some.

My option number was B88, and they were the rubber stick on kind. Trust me, I know. I ordered this car new, and (literally) watched it come off the truck that way. No aluminum channel, no rivets (it's hence been removed).

Having worked in a body shop in the late '70s (showing my age), the aluminum stuff was widely used on new / used cars. The channel came in long lengths, cut to the appropriate length, and had the customers choice of insert snapped in. I can only "assume" the originals were stick on specifically (my '87 had stick on, the WH1 is the aftermarket riveted).

IIRC rivited was the factory option and stick on was dealer applied or owner applied. Mine had the riveted ones which I removed and welded the holes for repaint. Looks MUCH better without the trim IMO. On that note, I have two almost perfect pairs of moldings with the rubber that I'm not ever going to reuse.

Dealer crap was the riveted stuff. Easy to apply and ruin any car with it, universal stuff. :p

Saw my WE4 car come off the trailer with the option code B88 and it was stick on and cost me $60. ;)

Sounds like the stick on molding is the GM installed stuff to me. I don't have the B88 option on my trunk label and have the riveted stuff, (personally, the moldings I have on my GN look better than the factory stuff anyway, lots of people ask me about them but don't have a clue where they came from).

Hard to believe this is the hot topic of the day.:)

B88

My window sticker says B88 $60. I took it off,it was stick-on. I bought the car new. My T-type also had stick-on. Same stuff.
