Just opened my hood the other day on a hot afternoon (after running the AC) and I noticed my SMC alcohol reservoir was at a nice, rolling boil. I run ethanol with a cap full of upper end lube oil. Does anyone know if this can cause problems? It seems to me that the alcohol vapor will get past the pump and enter the intake charge. Should I be worried?

Thanks,
6fire

I'd call or email Steve at SMC ASAP. I'd take Red Regal's advice and heed the warning there. Get it resolved before a major loss.

Because I use my one gallon radiator overflow bottle on my inexpensive and superior DIY alky injection system, I never had this problem. Maybe it's not dangerous to have boiling alcohol. I don't know.......I'm not a chemist, but it doesn't sound safe having a highly flammable liquid boiling under the hood. At least 6FIRE noticed this situation. How many have this situation and don't know it. More information about the dangers of this situation may be helpful. ;)

Methanol boils around 150 degrees and Ethanol around 170 degrees.

John you better check your tank with a thermocouple. ;)

Easy to achieve both temps. under the hood of the car near the radiator and turbo/downpipe.

You can get those temps. inside the car on a hot day so they most likely will occur in the trunk as well for those with tanks there.

Especially if you own a black car. :p

The thing I would be worried about isn't the boiling itself but how much vapor is being produced and escaping and if there's any extra or excess pressure created in the bottle.

What happened when you took the cap off?
