looking for tips for passing smog with a Max Effort. Im high on HC at idle and High on CO at 2250 rpm. I know its an open loop chip and not designed for smog. But I seem to remember people passing with it before. Las Vegas doesnt have that stringent of standards so I was hoping to squeeze through.
55 lb. injectors
cat for THDP installed
fuel pressure set at 41 psi (hose pulled)

Lower timing and leaner A/F lowers HC's and CO. There's no easy way to do this w/o re-burning the EPROM. (And I don't have the burner anymore)
Lower timing and richened A/F lowers NO.
 
I'm interested as well. I've got to go through Delaware emissions by the end of December with 72's & no EGR.;) We have an idle and 2500 RPM test (no dyno). Not sure yet what the limits are, but will post when I do.

Too lean drives you into a lean miss and HC skyrockets

Actually, leaner mixture push HC way up. As bruce said. It causes lean misfire, and pushes the HC through the roof.
With an open loop chip, it's going to be tough, but you need to get it as close to stoiceomentric A/F ratio as possible.
 
Youre correct Dave, my HCs went higher as I lowered the fuel pressure.
 
I have a good article on emissions, however, it's not available on the internet anymore. I guess I should've been more explicit. Try lowering the timing by 10 degrees, and increasing A/F to no more than 16:1.
 
Jack, That would be a neat trick with a Max Effort. Unless you know something I dont. :)
 
I don't recommend this for everyone but you can add alchy (I use meth lamp fuel) to the car and it burns cleaner and may allow you to sneak through. I've done this on several cars and it works and can't really be detected.

drain the gas after you pass as the alchy is hard on the injectors and fuel system but doesn't hurt it too bad if you only run it for a little while.

I don't think passing with the 72s will be EZ due to the very short PW at idle and not atomizing the fuel as well.

I passed OK with the 50's getting the car "drunk" and was surprised how clean they run.

a good fresh cat really helps too. I need to drill my RJC plate, running without the EGR now, and it seems to work fine open loop.

probably not a good idea from what I have read. good luck.
 
What's the water temp? A hotter thermostat or delaying the cooling fan to kick on to like 220 degrees can help burn cleaner. Try some HEET? Slap in a smog chip and let the 02 sensor help you? It sounds like you just want to see if you can do it with the ME. I like the way you do things.

BTW, those Las Vegas cab drivers can't drive worth a crap! I think you know what I'm talkin about.... ;)

I've re-burned M.E. chips before. I made one for Craig that was over-zealous, seeing the idle EGT's were ~1200, and fast idle caused the headers to glow.
Depending on your time frame, maybe I can re-write some code and then ask KrazyEd to burn it for you.
 
I'd appreciate if you wouldn't do that Jack, if Craig wants one he can come and see me.

Steve Y- I just lay down several modified smog chips into the larger eprom. I didn't literally mean that I alter your eprom. It's not worth it to try to get an open loop chip to pass, but your carrier makes it really easy to switch wide chips.
 
The last try I unplugged the fan and rolled in at about 210 degrees. I also poured about a gallon of alky in. Isnt there a guy named Scott ? that sells smog chips for around $15.00? Will they work with the EGR blocked? If all else fails I will probably just register it in my home state (Iowa). I can get away with that because Im active duty AF. Thanks guys !!
 
BTW, anybody know the smog test limits in Las Vegas these days?????
 
I could only find an old emissions paper (4-1/2 years ago), but here's the numbers it shows: (2500 RPM and Idle use same numbers)
TEST STANDARD
CO (%) <=1.20
HC (PPM) <=220
Dilution (CO+CO2) >=6.00
