Is this normal? The majority of the time, when I start up my car it blows smoke out the tail pipe. Both of my brother's ('86 and '87) cars also do it frequently (mine probably more frequently).
Does not matter whether the engine is warm or not for this to happen. Smoke is greyish, (not sure if black enough to say gas or oil?). only lasts a second or two on start up. Highest mileage on our engines is 22,000 and lowest is 1,000 and all do the same thing from time to time.

Any ideas ? Is this just one of those turbo buick things, and they all do it? Thanks.

I have a 20k mile car, and it does the same thing. Couple puffs right on startup, though only when cold, and then it goes away.

I have a new motor in my T and it is smoking on start up. I think oil is getting by the PCV valve and into the intake. Oil is in the plenum also. I am going to install a Fram G3 fuel filter after the PCV and before the check valve. I have heard this filter will stop the oil from going into the intake via the PCV.
I have a new AC PCV also.

Dave,

I installed a Fram G3 filter after my PCV and used my check valve. As I thought, the oil is coming from the PCV. I can see the oil being traped in the filter. This is the problem. The oil is going through the filter and into the plenum/intake. It still smokes on start up. This is a new with very good vacuum. People may think it is a POS, but when it is time to run they are quick to change their minds.:D

this is a normal condition on our buicks as GM decided not to use oil control seals on the exhaust valves. instead theres a groove in the valve stem which, as you have witnessed, does a poor job. many people will machine the guides down to accept a traditional seal. along with this a straight-stemmed exhaust valves must be used.

That is right on a head that has not been changed.

I have a new motor, machined exhaust guides with seals, new one piece exhaust valves. My problem is the oil is pulling through the PCV by vacuum.

Smoke here to

I used to think it was the seals on the Turbo gone bad like some may suggest, but I just dropped in a Fresh TE 44 and it still smokes a little at start up. Oh well, I guess it's just something to live with.

My car smokes alot at start up. About 2 weeks ago I filled a small parking lot with smoke. I guess my stock turbo is junk so now I have to go to a 44 or a 49 oh dang:D . My only problem besides the money is that I can't decide. The 49 is a little cheaper but I like the looks of the 44. I'll probably have a 49 by the end of summer.

I burn about a quart of oil every 150-200 miles, and max boost is 11psi with stock wg rod. I really need a turbo.
