Generally, no.
Black smoke under throttle generally refers to a rich condition.

Smoke is actually a good thing! At the top of second gear and in third, smoke means you are not LEAN! Long before scan tools were available, the "old folks" tuned on the "street" and tuned for "smoke" in third gear. This also requires reading spark plugs, reading fuel pressure, and keeping a eye on the knock sensor. Just my .02
