Generally, no.
Black smoke under throttle generally refers to a rich condition.
 
Smoke is actually a good thing! At the top of second gear and in third, smoke means you are not LEAN! Long before scan tools were available, the "old folks" tuned on the "street" :eek: and tuned for "smoke" in third gear. This also requires reading spark plugs, reading fuel pressure, and keeping a eye on the knock sensor. Just my .02
