"You really like me!"

Sally Field .........boy ...can she give a speech:eek:

It's okay to be excited. Sally Field's joy when she won the 1979 Academy Award for Norma Rae has never been forgotten: "You like me! You really like me!" And when she won the 1987 Oscar for Moonstruck, Cher said, "I know this does not mean I am somebody, but I am on my way to become somebody."

uuhhh, ok

The baddest hp wise was the 1970 Ram Air IV with the Pontiac 400, was 370hp. Next to that , the 73 and 74 455 Super Duty, SDs are the most sought after 2nd Gens.
Here's a link with all you ever wanted to know about 2nd Gen TAs.
http://www.iwaynet.net/~gl&lisk/transam.html

BTW, I've owned both the 403 Olds and 400 Pontiac powered ones from the late 70's, they were pigs because of the weight of the cars, the peanut cam, and tiny valves. Put a good cam and some better bigger heads and some headers and they can produce and handle some power.

Dam you guys are full of knowledge, thanks Party Rob that was a great read. Have you driven any of the SD455:eek:

Regardless of dimensions 400ci + Pontiacs are usually considered big blocks cause they are 'big' in inches.

The stunt/burnout cars were 4 speeds.

Overall cubes has nothing to do with big or small block
It has to do with the architechture.
There are now Chev small blocks 400+ cubes (I want to say as big as 454) and even the 400 small block was considered a well, small block

The pontiac engines were not considered "Big Blocks" because there was no small block. They are just Pontiac blocks.

All of this Smokey & The Bandit talk and very little mention of Sheriff Buford T. Justice!

Personally I would pick a 71 455 HO. Not the biggest stock horsepower maker but like a TR there is plenty of room for low-cost tinkering.

Now my dream T/A(using factory parts) would be a 70-73(best body) with a Ram Air V crate motor, close ratio trans, mid 3 series gear with the 79-81 WS6 suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes.

Zam, You're explanation is perfect for the Laymen. Us Gearheads know it already. My point was when you are on the street and the guy is talking about his big block 400-455 Pontiac you just go with it for the sake of arguement even though WE know its the same size dimensionally as a 326. We're talking factory stock size here. Big cube small blocks are in the aftermarket. Most people refer to Small blocks as under 400 ci and big blocks as 400 plus. I would guess its all based on the most popular engines..Chevrolet..whether they like 'em or not..they are the most familiar. :)

Or you can confuse the issue that GM made a "bigblock" 396 in some of the early 70's cars, yet there is also a GM "smallblock" 400 :)

This is all mute for anybody that knows anything about Muscle. Last year for the 396 was '69. In 1970 Chevy came out with the 400 small block so Chevy bored the 396 30 over and came out with the 402 big block. They didn't want a small block bigger than the infamous 396. :)

My dad had a 1972 Chevy 3/4 ton "Camper Special" pickup with the 402 BB. Lots of power but nothing more than a truck engine which is why you don't see them in "muscle" cars.

A lot of this is an argument of semantics. A 400 SMB Chevy is in the minor leagues compared to the smaller cubic inch 396 BB. The torque/power curve (on average) is beyond comparison. There IS NO comparison but surface dwellers only see cubic inches. :o

TT, The 402 was a bad azz in 1970 as the L78 375 hp option in all Camaros, Chevelles and Novas. Chevy also had 350 and 325 hp options. Everything was Detuned after 1971 and the 402 was phased out by 1974 when the 454 (which debuted in '70) was standard issue for all big block optioned vehicles.

Perhaps I should have said "that's why you don't see them in post 1972 vehicles".

I wonder why a lot of people don't build 402 BB's for performance applications as much as the 396? Parts availability perhaps?

TT, Anybody building a stock block 396 nowadays IS building a 402 or 408. Not to many standard bore 396s left. 30 over is a 402 and 60 over is a 408. Everything is interchangable except pistons.

I know this because I am a self proclaimed expert on Chevys. LOL. Now if only I was this knowledgable on TRs. Hmmm. :)

That's an easy one since I used to own this particular model. Question is how many know much about it?:
I know because there is a low mileage one in my garage. Here is a pic of my friends BIG BLOCK TA ( 72' 455-HO )

That blue w/white stripe TA and the white w/blue stripe original TA's are sky rocketing in value. I've seen a few go for over $60k with low miles on them.

????

Pontiac block is a pontiac block, not big,not small, just Pontiac. I know as my dad and I have had ponchos for as long as long as I can remember. I have a 67 GTO vert(dad bought it in 1980),he has a 67 vert&hard top,68 firebird vert, and even had a 72 400 pontiac in his 67 chevy pu. Hell I came home from the hospital in a 65 2+2 w/421 tri power&4speed...it burnt and was replaced with a 70 SJ 455/370 hp Grand Prix and it was traded in on a new 73 GP which they still own.
In his shop we have a 70 350 hp 400 and a 72 455 sitting for yet unforseen projects(just pulled the 400 out of my 77 formula I just sold).
Its just like telling everyone my T is not a GN,I just say I still have it:D That GTO got a big block in it? Answer-It has a 400 Pontiac in it.

Not bad , but I can take him with the TTA. He is not a motorhead so it could be tuned to run better. They should run side by side.

Hes had the car for about 20 years , so he got it @ bottom basement pricing. Not a bad investment if you hang on to them. Most people who have had such , don't have them anymore.
