I need to get my TA-49 rebuilt cause it smoking bad. When I get it done is there a way to turn that turbo into a ball bearing turbo by some custom work? I really want a ball bearing turbo but cant really afford on right now. Anyone every done this? Will it cost as much as a BB turbo? Anyone got a slightly used one I could trade for or buy? Thanks
-Andrew

Give Jack Cotton a call. He just built a TA49 BB for me & it is a sweet piece that spools very fast! :)

Last time I checked it was around 750.
IMO, you do not need a BB turbo in a 49 size as the 49 spools fast enough.
I think a BB would be good if you go to a larger turbo but keep the same converter.

Id imagine that thing would surge like crazy at light throttle/rpm with light load. I had a TE44 old school on the engine in my sig and it surged really bad with the .63 garrett housing on it. I would go for the .85 at all costs if BB.

What will you use that for, road racing? That thing going to spool like MAD!!!!

It's just being used on a street car & spools up instantly  with the stock D5 converter. There are NO surge issues with it but it was not built with conventional 49 wheels.

You wont see too many like that with the stock compressor cover thats been machined for the 60 wheel.
