I got in the GN yesterday to drive to my shop to install the right torque convertor  and....I get 2 blocks form the house and the stop light turns red, so I start to slow down. That's when I realize I have no power steering and the car is not running! So here I sit in the middle of one of the busiest intersections in the DSM area and the s.o.b. won't start. Fast forward past my neighbors coming to push me out of the street, me driving across the city to get the trailer, coming back, loading the car (by myself), and towing it across the city again...(guess that wasn't really a fast forward, was it.) There it sits in the shop. I'm kinda stumped at this time, because EVERYTHING on this car is NEW!! I figure out I'm not getting any fuel...(plugs are dry after cranking). So I unplug the powermaster, and the power antenna, so I can listen for the fuel pump. I can hear it prime when I turn the key on. I pull the schrader cap to hook up a pressure gauge...minimal fuel spray...get the pressure gauge hooked up and turn the key on. I hear the pump prime but the gauge doesn't move from zero. (Keep in mind, EVERYTHING is new---tank/pump/lines along the frame/filter/regulator/injectors etc. Not even 600 miles on any fo them!) After several different tests and such, I finally decide I need to drop the tank and actually SEE the pump running. After all that...my NEW pump runs, but doesn't pump anything!!  It just seems like I can't drive this car more than 1 week at a time before something goes wrong.

So, now I need a new fuel pump. What do you guys reccommend?? I had a Walbro 340 that is now a P.O.S. I have heard they had some problems with some of their pumps....could mine be one of them?? I bought it about two years ago or so. Is there a way to tell if this one was one of the bad ones?? If so, what can I do about it?? (Probably take it in the shorts, I'm sure, but I guess I gotta try.)

I think I'm done with my rant....at least for now...until something else breaks!!

LMK what you guys think... ---Keith

Keith,
Sorry to hear about your troubles.

How did you test the pump?
Very odd that a fuel pump suddenly dies 100% and does not pump anything at all.
FWIW; The failures with the Walbro pumps was with the 169 pump, not the 340’s.

I pulled the tank and removed the pump from the hanger. took the sock off and plugged it in while I submersed the bottom in gas...(I don't reccommend doing it this way, coulda been bad!!) The pump started but nothing came out of the outlet on the top.
Guess it's not a 340 pump after all.
The numbers stamped on the side of the pump are as follows:
F20000169
15107-1 MADE IN USA
PAT. 450270 5421306

Is this one pf the bad ones??

looks like one of the bad ones- it's got the "169" in the number- you might be able to get it replaced yet if you scream loud enough. do a search and read up about the Walbro failures..

Did the search and read for the past couple of hours, before I started this thread...still have two questions:
1. I bought it off a board member not from a vendor...does it qualify??
2. All the threads I read were from 4 or 5 months ago...is it too late??

X2 ..... Except ........
Don't scream.
The failures were well advertised and documented, and the deadline has passed.
I too had one of the W169's, purchased the Denso pump (before the fix and recall was completed), installed it, and moved on.
Never send the pump back.

Jerry went the smart way. Sorry to here you had to do it again Keith. Get the denso and you should be good.

Sorry to hear about it... at least it wasn't the trans. like mine, a couple weeks ago...

Keith you should know by now that our cars really never run. They just sit in the garage and get worked on constantly!!!!!!

BTW, I still need to get you this MAF sensor.

If you didn't notice, I was going over to change the torque convertor cause mine isn't right for the turbo....had to do it this weekend so it could go to the tranny shop (for the 4th time:rolleyes: ) to get the first gear slipping fixed. Not gonna make it now. But hopefully I will have some nice headers for it soon!!

Ain't that the truth!!;) I'd drive out there to get that MAF....but....

Oh well, I'll look at the bright side....the car really shined when we were all pushing it down Meridith Dr. Saturday.....man it coasts nice!!

Keith, When you get the headers PM me please. I need some measurements and better pics for what I'm doing. I think you know what it is. Thanks

So I got her running again!!! Tranny still sucks out loud. However, I was getting some odd things going on as well...It seemed when I would accelerate, more than the normal driving, that it would pull hard and then it was like someone turned the ign switch of for a second...the car would fall on its face during acceleration, for an instant, and the SES light would flash...but just for a second. No codes were stored. All the SM #'s seemed to be pretty normal. Any thoughts on this one??

Will do Charlie. ;) BTW, nice purchase on the '82 GN....need a carbed turbo motor for that old girl??

That's what my car did when I zapped the ecm by starting the car with a low battery with my batt. charger hooked up and on 'start'.... split second flash of the SES, accompanied by what seemed like someone flicked the ign. switch off/back on.... no codes stored.... junkyard ecm for $35 fixed it... didn't hurt the chip or calpack... see if the ecm will flash the '12' code with a paper clip in the aldl.... my smoked ecm wouldn't.... easy check...

Thanks Keith. I've got 2 3.8 engines and 1 4.1 right now so I think I'm good for now. The car came with a crate engine that I'm going to tear into so I can make sure it's good. If everythings right the T is the parts car and the 82 is my main focus. I just need to finish my turbo project now so I can play a little harder. Sorry to hear about the issues you are having now but if our cars didn't keep us busy what would we do. Get a life?LOL:eek:

Keith, did you install a hotwire kit on that fuel pump? I know thats not your problem but it's a good upgrade for extra insurance.

Sounds like the ECM is loosing power.
Verify battery cables and ECM plug.

Easy way to tell without PL ;) is .............
Drive the car for a bit, and monitor the BLM's at idle. Most likely, it will not be at 128.
After the "cut off", look at the idle BLM. Is it at 128? If it is, there is your answer.
