it hasn't really been accepted by society since the 80s
can't even smoke in a bar these days.

you're just really nitpicking tobacco users if you choose to call smokers "society accepted drug addicts"
so is in that case the man addicted to vodka, or the 450lb woman addicted to cheese fries, the sex addicts, the people addicted to "prescription" drugs, someone who gets off by drinking 6 expresso shots in their coffee, gambling addiction, the list can go on and on.....
all drugs in whatever your flavor may be..
all addicts feeding their addictions..
all accepted by "society" because they are "legal"

Smokers have been villified, ostracized, alienated, humiliated, marginalized and made the scapegoat for bad health & disease. I don't see how that is "getting a free pass" from society.

Hundreds of billions of U.S. dollars have been paid by Big Tobacco (ultimately by the smokers themselves) under the guise of smoker education and health care programs spotlighting smoking. Most States only used a fraction of the total for it's intended purposes and funnelled the remainder into their General Funds to be used as a gigantic slush funds for everything except smoking prevention, education and related costs.

When I was a child, about 50% of the adult population were smokers, glorified, no doubt by movies and advertising. That population is down to about 18% nationwide as we speak.

Smoking is the ultimate "gateway drug". It leads to drinking, legal and illegal drug use & abuse, and, God forbid, driving cars FAST!

It is a filthy, nasty habit and should be totally outlawed. It's users and proponents should be thrown in prison along with other drug users (including pain relief users and alcoholics). They are a bane on Society and must suffer shame. We can then go after the people driving obsolete, polluting cars.

That's all I can write at this time, as I must go to the store in my 23 year old jalopy and buy another pack of smokes.:D

I quit smoking about 6 years ago. I dont think smoking is as bad since its not mind altering (in most cases). I got through 4 years of college going out for a smoke break in between classes. I dont think I would have done as well if it was a "drink Break" or "crack break". Im not saying smoking isnt bad, it just doesnt impact your behavier as much.

Actually Nicotine had the same neurological effects as Cocaine and Alcohol. The Nicotine isn't as potent as Pure Coke and Alcohol, but one drop of pure Nicotine will kill you.

I can just see it now...

Officer: Have you had a few cigarettes tonight son?

Me: Uh no sir...well maybe just a couple

Nicotine, Opiates, Alcohol, Marijuana...... ALL are drugs and ALL have SOME who can't get enough.

I think smokers get a free pass because smokers don't rob, steal, lie, beat, etc.... in support of their addiction.

Smokers put more strain on our health care system then ALL illegal drugs put together.

Do smoker's get a free pass from society?

No, smoker's don't get a free pass from society. Overweight people do. They outnumber smoker's and drug users 4 to 1 and are the nation's single highest health care cost!

You know what kills me about this subject, tobacco is one of the main reasons America thrived back at that start through a couple of centuries... Where would the south be without tobacco and cotton? The tobacco is not the problem it is the additives they put in it.

It was also the main reason we started using slaves. Ya great we "thrived". Look what it got us.

This is about tobacco, Not slavery so please don't go there. This is one of the reasons that America will always have racism because people just won't stop! I am a smoker , I do not feel we get a free pass at all, you are looked at by most as diseased cattle. Yes it is a habit I wish I had not started and I am working on putting them down right now. Thats just life. Everyone has some kind of habit and all the smokers in America are not putting near the amount of stuff in the air as you do [ everyone ] everyday driving your cars to work but I don't see you driving a bicycle anymore either lol. Merry Christmas all Daniel:biggrin:

Agreed, it's the poison they put in there that kills you. Remove nicotine (drug) and there would be little, if any demand.

I guess one could make the same claim for Beer as well. Remove the alcohol and there would be no demand. Starch, hops, yeast, etc... would still be there but no one cares about that.....

Growing up in one of the biggest Tobacco counties in the country I have seen it all... I know people that have smoked there own smokes, tobacco;), straight out of the barn for as long as I can remember...

The nicotine they had is purely for addiction purposes only, it doesn't make it taste any different...
