Is it possible to have a solid mid to low 12's streed GN running on regular street tires not DR's. If so whats an estimated cost.

Thanks

Most all of them are. Good tune with the right combo you pull 16-20mpg AND potential low 11's with low dollar investment(except the cost of the car). Less than 1500 should do it. Traction is an issue for these cars

Nitto DR's are regular street tires. :)

Typical 11 second combo. will run those times on spinning tires.

thanks, yeah traction is a issue...is 1500 for DIY basic stuff or major engine work involved

Injectors, chip, and alky system. Good tune and you won't open the motor until 10's (or you pop a head gasket) Tune is critical for these cars.

If it were me....this is what i would do if i had your goal. Prices will vary of course. Good for mid to low 12's on the street. Keep in mind you could do it for less $....this is just my idea.

V4 IC --- $700
TE44 or TA-49 turbo --- $700
50# injectors --- $350
3'' downpipe --- $300
Drag Radials --- $300
and maybe an Alky Kit --- $400

I ran 8.26 @ 86 mph with my 86 GN a few years ago with a very simple combo.....TE44, big neck stock I/C, 009 injectors, Mease downpipe, Hooker catback, B&M shift kit, RA 93 chip, hotwired Walbro 340. Boost was 19-20# with a splash of Xylene to keep knock away. Car was in everyday driver mode, radials and all. My T went 8.29 @ 87 a few weeks ago on Pep Boys radials, but it had a bit more done to it engine wise.....still through a stock neck intercooler though.

As long as the car is in good condition, do the basics and then upgrade a few things.....car should easily run mid-low 12's on radials. Heck, I'm gonna shoot for some 11's with the new motor/turbo combo....on pump gas and radials....

Less than $1,500 for low 11s, eh? Boy, have I got a lot to learn.

I know how you feel. I feel like I am fighting the car, having grown up in the import crowd hasn't been helpful. Seems like none of the principles apply with regard ignition and fuel and from my most basic courses you think all 4 cycle combustion motors would work on basically the same methods.

Only mods to a 114k mile un-opened block car were: open dump,36# injectors, race fuel, boost 22 psi, drag radials, some type of hyper chip. Run 9 minutes prior was 12.53@108.47. Consistant low 13's before and after those runs. Car dyno'ed the day prior 248.6 hp/407.8 tq.-WinPep Dynojet.
Adding alittle to a stock car can make a world of difference. With the advent of new injectors and quality chip burners AND alky injection, what you are looking for is very doable if you can keep the tires biting and an excellent tune.

thanks for all the info. are all these do ii yourself mods. I'm not the most mechanically inclined when its comes to cars. So very simple will do.
Thanks

Yes, the hard part is paying
Low level wrenching skills is all you need and take your time. Do one mod at a time to check improvements(except chip/inj. go together) Invest in a G tech to save the strip fees. GET A SCANMASTER!!

Thats why I want to stay around 1000 and also cuz i told my brother that I would beat is 04 Cobra with just 1000 invested. His car is strong so i have to do things right. where do i get a scanmaster and how much does it cost.

I've got one with the manual I'll sell ya for 200 bucks shipped. fair? I think thier like 250 brand new. ??

bty 100k+ mile unopened engine with 009's, chip, a 54, red's xp fuel pump and a 20 lb launch netted some 7.60's

combo

5 years ago I modded my buddies GN that was bone stock

ATR 2.5" exhaust, Bowling green 3" dp
Fuel pump & hot wire kit
K&N airfilter
Strip Chip
Race fuel
Adjustable Fuel Regulator
1 air bag pass side
boost guage
Stock turbo

We set the fuel presure to 42 pounds and took it too the strip, did not know a thing about tuning back then. Just slapped the parts on and got lucky.

Went 12.3 @107, this was on slicks and launching with 5 pounds of boost. 60' was a 1.85.

Now this was on a 6000 mile car but should work on yours.
Track was a 425 above sea level and 70 degree day.

Welcome to the board Pilgrum!

you didn't state what year vehicle you have. there is the 84-85 known as the hot-air type and the 86-87 intercooled. but before any mods are attempted, read and learn as much about the vehicle as you can. there are several boards w/ tried and true methods already noted and it wil save you a lot of money, time and headaches.

you can start w/ www.gnttype.org and of course check out all the info. here under the different sub headings. the knowledgeyou aquire will bring you up to speed quicker and allow you to communicate better. check out the different recipes the fellows have taken the time to write up and share w/the rest of the board members. It will take you a little time, but it will be well worth it in the long run. You will find, you have the ability to do your own tuning and much of the reqired wrenching.

two other boards w/available info are www.turbobuicks.com and www.t6p.com

T-brake, fuel pump, big turbo, alky, 11.1

or, skip the alky and add a $1000 IC.

(Edit, forgot about converter, $850, tires, scanmaster, chips, axles for launching $200, driveshaft loop, downpipe $400, on and on)

Ahhh, never mind.,

The basics DO work. Problem is, many people don't know the basics. More air, more fuel, more power. Adding a camshaft with more duration and lift is NOT basic. It works on a normally aspirated engine, by allowing higher rpm, but all that does is to let the engine pump more air and more fuel. A turbo or a supercharger is an alternative way to get more air, without going to higher rpm, and without going to huge ports and valves. The trick is in starting your thinking all the way at the REAL basics, not at those things that are second tier, which may or may not be useful on a turbo Buick.

1000 budget

a 1000 buget is limiting for sure.

Best bet is to keep your eye on the parts for sale on this board and try and save some money catching some deals.

Down pipe and exhaust are somewhat manditory to your goals as well as chip and air cleaner. Alky will cost some Ka-Ching $$ 500 or so.

If you dont get alky and know when your gonna line up with your buddies Cobra, throw some race fuel into the tank! and spank!

Make sure your drivers side header is not cracked as well.

Get to know your car well, dont just put the parts on and run right out to race this guy, get it dialed!

Dont race him from a Roll! I made this mistake with a supecharged Cobra once while driving my Stage 2 70 sport wagon. He smoked me! Funny thing was that when I see him at the dragstrip I killed him! He spun bad, but from a roll that superchaged Cobra was BAD! He was turning 12.7 at the track and I was running 12.3 holeshotting him. So I did get some pay back!

You said it was a 04 Cobra? is it the supercharged model? Big difference in the supercharged and normally aspirated model.
