Who out there has this cam, and what timing chain are you using with it?
Anyone successfully using GM stock unit with it? I have a pretty new GM on now (maybe 3,000 miles on it) and would like to continue using it when I put this cam in. Ive been told that this cam is hard on stock type chains.
I also have a double roller (I think it was from BGC) that I could use, has about 15,000 miles on it.

P.S. Thanks for the suggestion on the rollmaster chain Reds. Just want to see what others experiences have been.

thats cool I'd like to see who's running this cam too..I know a few have changed to it.

I just got in from some 24# pulls on the car..
wont hook for crap its 41 degrees out and roads are too cold it finally tries to stop hazing the times just before my chip locks the converter which is at 100 mph..

I tried locking the converter and hittin it from 1st gear roll and going in 2nd and locking at same time but car kept blowing em off so hard it wouldnt stay strait at all.

oh yea thats on 28/12.50 et streets at 14# of air

can ya tell I gotta rush... cant wait to feel 30#

What are the specs on this cam (lift, lobe separation, installed lobe centerline)? How aggressive are the lobes - is the valvetrain noisy? Naturally SpeedPro doesn't have a parts catalog online and Northern Auto (where I think you recommended buying it) doesn't list it online either. Thanks.

I ran this cam for three seasons with no problems .still in great condition. ran a stock replacment chain.cam pulls hard.I ran a nonlock up convertor and my car never drops in rpm below around 4700-6000.with a nonlock up you dont bog the engine like you would with a lock up in 3rd gear.Im running a 10" with a 400

For what it's worth, I would highly recommend swapping the timing chain! The stock replacements still rely on that crappy tensioner setup, which is fine for a daily driver that you expect to get 100,000+ miles out of, but, from a racing and performance standpoint it's not the hot tip.
I always recommend using a good straight double roller that eliminates the tensioner, and also allows for adjustability when you degree the cam. There are many on the market, as mentioned; Rollmaster, Cloye's, etc. (ATR sells the Cloye's unit).
It just doesn't make much sense to do a cam, w/o putting on a good double roller while you're there. They're about $90, and worth every penny!

Hey Bobby, was that on your '85 motor? As far as lockup vs. nonlockup, mine is a 2800 lockup. That 3rd gear bog you mentioned, I guess thats why guys hook up a switch to manually lock it up?
Guys, I noticed when I had my double roller it seemed to have a little bit of slack on one side, I think where the tensioner would go. I left the tensioner off because I was told this was a no-no with double rollers. Is this slack just the norm for a Buick chain, and if so will it add noise to drivetrain? Dont want any false knock from it.
Also, JToups386 mentioned degreeing the cam. I have put plenty of cams in, mostly Chevys, but have never degreed any. Is it a must that I degree this cam? Is it unecessary? Or is it recommended, and if so why?

I've ran this cam and plan on putting it in a future rebuild . Pulls strong and has a GREAT top end . Idles like a stocker . No down side .

I am putting my motor with the 204/214 in it right now. I'll hopefully fire it up tommorow morning. After 500 miles I'll tell ya'll how it pulls. But I've done a lot of changes to it other than the cam as well so it will hopefully be a great combo.

Glad to hear you guys like this cam. What I wanted to find out though is how many of you are using stock timing chains with it, and have you had any problems. Reds Hot Air has had problems with this cam beating up stock type chains. I have a GM stock chain that I want to use, I should have the cam Monday.

You'll here mixed opinions on this topic. Some say "ye", and some say "ne".
Here's what you have to be willing to gamble with;
1.) Do you trust that the cam is going to be ground with the proper (desired) degree from the manufacturer, when stabbed straight in? In the case of buying an "off the shelf" grind like this,,, most likely it will be right. But,,, what if...?
2.) Do you trust the accuracy of the keyways on the roller chain gear?

I've had 1 out of 6 cam installs (over 10 years) on my Buicks come in wrong. It was off by 3-4 degrees, and to me, that's unacceptable. That's a 17% error ratio in my case, and just furthers my belief to degree the cam.

Now, having said all that,,, I've known many guys who don't degree theirs, and have had no problems at all. I've just been taught to always take the time to degree the cam, and no for sure that it's right. To me, it just makes sense, and is worth the time!

The price was $100 (Canadian $$$$) . Which works out to about $63 US .

Nice run RED!!! It's funny that you are getting these incredible numbers out of this "off the shelf" RV style cam. A friend of mine has used this grind in big-block RV's and hay-haulers many years ago, and it just becomes amusing that our cars act similar to those apps... Of course, we are torque monsters, which relates to those other type apps too.
You should feel lucky that they are just now ragging you to get a cage too. I got my butt reamed by the time-slip girl here, for simply running 11.9's. You must be at a lienient track...?
