SS 454 or 87GN?

Found a Chevy SS 454 with 6,000 orig miles today in Dallas, the guy wants to sell it to purchase my neighbors 1932 Chevy. I ran it by the wife/financial advisor and she said I can buy it!:smile: There is a catch, I have to sell my GN.

The GN is a clean now 2 owner, never been wrecked bone stock fully documented with every reciept ever, and every piece of paperwork that came with the car originally. The only knock on the GN is the mileage 134,000miles. I think she should let me have both, but I would be crazy to sell my GN to get a SS454 right?

I already know that answer!

But seriously does anyone know alot about the 454 because I am trying to convince her that I need both. Help me out here!

I believe thats why there are so many different cars made. Everyone has their own preffrence and choice. If you have to ask someone what to do in this case, either you are unhappy with what you got, board of it, or to attached. If you have been looking or always wanted a specific car, go get it. If not noone can answer that question but you.

454 SS pickup was a torque monster, but they are nothing really that special....regular cab, short box with some options. You can expect piss poor gas mileage (single digits) and crappy truck ride, and most people will think you're just some redneck with chrome wheels and stickers on the side of the bed. Keep your GN and never look back.

Ditto here. The SS454 is really a DOG! The new 1/2 ton 5.3 trucks will kill it. If you want a performance truck, buy a Syclone or a Lightning. The Lightning industry is growing in leaps and bounds. They are getting over 1,200 hp (turbocharging them) with stock crank and 4V Navigator heads. You can buy a new steel crank at Ford for around $400. They are even nitrided from the factory. The cylinder heads on the SS454 were "peanut" port and they NEED bigger heads to make power. If you want the big block and want to make power, it'll take some work. Then the TBI on it is a REAL weakness in regards to performance upgrades. GM Chevy Truck Horsepower Chart (1987-2000) They'll smoke the tires for a week, but you will be embarresed by many ricers from a roll.

After going back and looking at what I posted this morning I can see I wasn't very clear. I do want to keep my GN, never a question there. I guess my question was as followed.

Should I consider getting the 454SS Truck and would this one be a good truck to have? I will have to say I love cars and I have owned my fair share so far, and I love to trade and get something different all the time. But as far as my GN I waited 20 years to get one so I am going to keep her for a good while. The only knock thing was about the mileage, sometimes I wish I would have looked a little harder to find one of the same nature with fewer miles.

Thanks for the advice about the 454 SS everyone, it seems like they aren't really that great.

and let me guess...the guy wants 15-20K for the SS Pickup? Unless its under $9-10K I would tell him to pound sand. There'd have to be a real Chevy truck junkie out there to want to collect that, I wouldn't buy it for an investment....but I could be wrong.

If I remember correctly, one went through Barret Jackson this year, super low miles, cutsom wheels, paint, and some other goodies...along with a bunch of autographed stuff from clebrities and such, went for around $40,000 and that was only because all of the money was going to Darrel Gwynn's Childrens' Hospital or something.

That's what he is asking! I like trucks and would like to have one as a daily driver but that one would eat me alive in gas and you could never insure it for what you pay for it. The GN's are very hard to beat in the gas department!

Now if you really want both, explain to her how every house should have atleast one truck. It's independence As for the truck it's self, they're nice trucks but not all that. They came with some open chambed heads making them pretty low compression/low power. You can swap in something like some 396/375hp heads and bump it up a little. They also came stock with 4:10 gears. I think they got like 9mpg as well.

I owned a 454 SS truck new, Couldn't catch a cold let alone be called a powerhouse:wink:they look nice though.
