Excellent point, detonation is very hard on the entire motor. Most of the time when you notice it, it's too late.
I had no detonation issues and ran real safe tunes and it still broke. It can happen to any motor, when trying to push horsepower.
Problem with the buick stuff, is it is more costly due to limited supply of viable old performance stage parts and limited manufacturers of new ones. When you see a car laying down a number with the 6 cylinder, it is something special though.
